Default AOPA medical and legal - worth it?

Hi everyone,

Anyone have experience using AOPA's legal/medical plans? Is it worth the expense?

Over a decade ago, during my freshman year I got an underage drinking fine. Then, seven years ago I was briefly prescribed meds for depression/anxiety. Off all meds for 6.5 years. Is this still an issue? Can AOPA help with this? Should I be worried?

I am planning to report all on Class I application.

Thanks in advance.

If you ever need it, it's probably worth it.

But the legal plan probably only covers matters which occurred after you enrolled...they don't let you buy collision insurance the day after you get in a wreck either.

I've held it for several years, but never used it. Even if it's just for the peace of mind that it gives you, I think it's worth it.

I agree that it will only cover issues that occur after you've enrolled. Make sure you purchase the level of coverage for the type of flying you are going to be doing.

Those are some good points. I hadn't considered that the AOPA plans might only cover incidents/issues after enrollment.

Any ideas on where to get objective medical/legal advice for issues which transpired years ago? Is there anywhere safe to ask frank questions? (Without screwing myself for years to come?)

I just don't want to invest $1000s on training if I will never be hired, or pass medicals, etc.

Thanks all for the helpful insight,
