So I had been planning to attend the WIA conference in Orlando next month, that is, until I managed to break my ankle at my brother's bachelor party:-( (insert jokes here!). Additionally, I discovered that instead of standing in long lines to speak to recruiters, you'll now have to get in line for a fast pass, which will then allow you to schedule a specific time to speak to a recruiter.

So what do y'all think? Is it counterproductive for me to still attend the conference to speak to recruiters (for the majors)? Am going to be on crutches for another 6 weeks. Do you think it shows initiative for me to show up on crutches?:-)

Am a fairly new regional captain, looking to take the next step, and really don't want to pass up the opportunity to get some face-to-face time with so many recruiters. Looking for serious reactions and advice.

p.s. Broke my ankle playing paintball:-)

Wow, iv played paintball for 10+ years, and have never seen someone get hurt (with exception to bad welts). But its bound to happen, especially if you were in the woods or something. I take it the bachelor party wasnt just guys? Im confused. I havent seen that before haha. Judging by your profile pic your a woman? Just curious if it was a mixed gender bachelor party.

In all seriousness and honestly, Id say go. If you get facetime with recruiters whats bad about that? Its an ankle injury, not an amputation. You can still fly once its healed. :)

What does one wear to the conference? Airline uniform? Flight suit? Suit? Casual? Not job seeking just attending.

So, as I see it, I'll have to wait to register at 8am and THEN go and try to get a Fast Pass. Americans Fast pass line opens at 8:30am and with everyone lining up at 4am I doubt it will be remotely possible to get one.

Am I reading into all this correctly?

A select few waited in line at 3-4a. Everyone else mostly showed up around 7a. The delta Line was the longest. One side it's delta, Alaska, JetBlue and the other was united, American. Surprisingly the fast pass allowed more space and quality time with said airlines. United during their presentation said only talk with them once if you get a fast pass and not do repeat visits. Each member on the united committee is equal, you don't have to wait to speak with Charlie. He said each member of his team is like talking to him.

The standby lines (in United's case) did not get the 1 on 1 face time but group face time.

Overall the space is bigger than last year and organized better as they expected a large crowd.

USAirways just had an IT person to answer ques about your app if any issues. Mostly just talk with AA people.

Longest lines obviously were united, delta, American. Followed by Alaska, southwest, JetBlue, atlas, ups, fedex, and then Virgin America.

People saying you must be there at 4a to get a fast pass is not completely true.... Those that got there at before 8 got ones to united and possibly delta or American.

Enjoy the time and network. Highly recommend the airline presentations followed by Q/A. Answers a lot of ques of the app/hiring process.

If you are not job seeking just go business casual. Like a golf / polo shirt and pants. Saw people wearing uniforms to full suits for those looking for jobs.

Was there a pilot shortage? :)

WARich 03-07-2014 04:09 AM

how long was the Atlas line?

Learflyer 03-07-2014 04:14 AM

Was this a job fair? Or shopping at Best Buy on Black Friday?

Hope some of you get hired for your efforts.

Is there still a chance to talk to a recruiter if you cannot get a fast pass for that particular airline?

I used that same analogy when I had to wake up early for the FastPass and when I saw the speed walking of people flocking to the seats in the "holding area". I was told from friends who attended Thursday what to expect and some tips... I still thought it was a mad house. Can't understand why they can't do a type of seniority number for every airline and then leave time at the end for those that don't have one. These dog and pony shows are getting old, but... got to stick out somehow!

The fast pass was a good thought, I think next year theyll smooth the process out and get it to where you get your fastpass in advance prior to coming. I hope next year I actually get to attend wai to actually enjoy the conference and not search for a job.

best part of the stay was Rix lounge :) . Was great to see a lot of friends I hadn't seen in 10 years! I hope Dallas next year has a similar setup to get people together like that
