Back when I went to college, I had a choice of either going away to a college and get an aviation degree, or staying local and getting a Business Degree while finishing up my ratings at a local part 61 flight school. I chose the latter because everyone said it didn't matter what my degree was in as long as it was a 4 year Bachelor's Degree. I also wanted to have something else to fall back on in case of loss of medical, getting out of aviation, etc, etc.

Well, that was then, and this is now. Delta now claims that you score more points on the application with an aviation degree (completed in 4 years or less). The Fedex application asks what type of school you received each certificate/rating, although I have not heard how that is weighted or what they prefer (I'm sure that my Part 61 training is the least impressive).

I am in no way saying that getting the aviation degree is the way to go. Years ago, no airline seemed to care what you majored in, and now some emphasis is placed on it. The bottom line is there are pros and cons to an aviation major. I think in the long run as long as you have a 4 year degree, and the rest of your application is competitive, you should not have a problem.
