Adding something like this ("I 'kinda' had this thing that wasn't really a failed checkride...") in an interview is asking for trouble.
If you are going to tell them anyway, then disclose it beforehand. Otherwise, things could get pretty awkward, not to mention just plain confusing.

Thanks to everyone for the input, especially the FOIA request. Learned something new.
Turns out I do have a "notice of disapproval" from my private pilot license oral in there. I honestly don't remember that happening, and until now, all evidence was to the contrary that I knew of. I retook the test the very next day and passed.
The Form 8710 says "no-fly, failed oral" for the checkride.
Seriously, like a million thanks to the FOIA request idea. This was +10 years ago and it all happened within the space of 2 days. I'm glad I found this before applying to the majors.
