Default The checkride bust that wasn't

Quick, weird question.

Filling out apps to majors. Question about failed checkride. Private Pilot initial checkride. I was 17 years old. DPE, during the oral; said "this isn't going well, let's try again tomorrow". Never gave me a pink slip, instructor never re-endorsed me for the reattempt, we just met the next day and finished the test. WAS THIS A FAIL? Never got a pink slip, my PRIA from FAA doesn't show any failures or violations or letters...

I don't check the "failed checkride" box on applications, but in the interview, I ALWAYS mention this occasion just in case. The interviewers have ALWAYS expressed appreciation for doing so, but I've never seen ANY proof of an actual failure or letter of discontinuance or whatever.

Can anyone clarify this issue for me? Point me to a way to actually check if a part 61 failure is recorded?

Its pretty safe to say that the DPE helped you out. You did not have a failure if you did not receive a pink slip and its not on your pria. I wouldn't tell the story unless you want something to talk about. A failed private wouldn't matter anyway but why bring up something that never happened.

Agreed. Not a fail. Got lucky, which is halfway to a legacy!

A failure is a failure. You didn't have one.

Part 61, Part 141, Part 142, makes no difference.

What the DPE did is contrary to FAA policy, but that's not your problem. If you were not issued a FAA Form 8060-5, Notice of Disapproval of Application, then no Unsat/Bust/Failure occurred.
What he did was essentially a "Discontinuance" but it was inappropriate IF your performance was the reason. Discontinuances can be done for very specific circumstances, such as bad weather, maintenance issues, or you or the DPE get "sick" during the practical test.

Should be a non-event, I wouldn't even mention it.

Just look at the dates in your logbook and in your FAA records to make sure there's nothing "weird" that might prompt questions later. If you haven't already, order your record from the FAA (FOIA request to ensure you get all of it) and review it in detail.

When I received a copy of my PRIA from my latest background investigation, nothing showed up at all other than my vitals and airman information (dates and classes of certificate[s])

I didn't get a copy of the FOIA, although the company surely did. I wonder if the FOIA would show anything the PRIA wouldn't?

No, because you didn't fail the practical test. There won't be a record of something that doesn't exist.
