I'm loosing my corporate job due to the low oil prices over the last year and a half. I never really considered the airlines because I enjoyed the corporate life so much. That being said, there are allot of unemployed pilots in my area for the same "low oil price" reasons. To find a job I'll most likely have to relocate my family.
Long story short, I'm wondering if the airlines would actually hire an old guy like me. 50 years old seems kinda over the hill to start an airline career but thinking of feeding the family if you know what I mean. I know I'll take a huge cut in pay for 2 or 3 years but understand I could be back up to "6 digits $" after a few years if its with a major.
Any thoughts of advise from the guys out there that know about these things?

What he said. Not just barely six figures in year two at least at Delta. Base and lifestyle choices abound. Good luck.

Actually, I would think the airlines want a mix of different ages across their new hire classes. That way they meter out the retirements down the road. If everybody in every class is 25 years old, in 40 years there will be a huge retirement surge, similar to what we are experiencing now. I am probably giving them too much credit for thinking about that, but if I were king that is what I would be doing.

Thanks for all the responses....the more I think about things the closer I get to taking the airlines seriously, at least the better paying ones.
As far as I can tell Southwest, Delta, and United are the only ones that will get you into the 6 digits by year 2 or 3, or am I missing a couple?
I can't fly for the cheep air guys.....I'd be better off taking a questionable corporate gig for $70-$80K than committing to a pony plane operator at my age.
I've thought about part 135 but it just never seemed to be the right thing for me. Where I've been flying out of for most of my time all the 135 operators are kinda flaky. There are always rumors about the quality of their maintenance and all the manipulation and games they play with the pilots.....lowballing them on salary and stuff. Not to mention the stories we know to be true...those are worst than the rumors.
