Not correct, while they will begin a basic background check when offered the job, the deeper background is often times not complete prior to day one of Indoc. New Hires are briefed they may still get phone calls with background check questions.

I'm pretty sure every US pilot has to go through a FBI investigation (w/fingerprints) before being able to fly within the country... the initial background check is to weed out any problem children. My info is a bit aged (hired in 2000) but during my new hire induce we lost 2 hires... one for background investigation and one for medical (when we used to have company medical)... his lab work was no bueno.

True. I was called with a question a day before my final simulator event. Be honest on your application.

I didn't get my ID the same day as my classmates due to a 10+ year old issue. This is a HUGE reason to be 100% honest. I was dismayed, but my stress level was relatively low. Plenty of guys (intentionally leaving out the more responsible sex) have gotten hired with past transgressions.
My experience with HR seemed to show that by the time you are in training, the company just wants to make sure you aren't going to be a liability whilst going through customs. So basically after you're hired, they don't care what you did, they just want to make sure all the T's are crossed and I's dotted on their end.

Make no mistake, if they find something in your closet that you didn't disclose, your time in training as a united pilot will be cut short and you will be shown the door...
