Good news for ABX Air today
ANA says to oustsource cargo flights to ABX Air
Tue May 1, 2007 10:01 AM ET
TOKYO, May 1 (Reuters) - All Nippon Airways (ANA) <9202.T>, Japan's No. 2 airline, said on Tuesday it would outsource some air cargo flights to U.S. freight airline company ABX Air Inc. <ABXA.O> to help it expand its cargo business.
ANA said the deal would mark the first time a Japanese airline outsourced cargo flights to a foreign firm.
In a statement, ANA said ABX Air would operate 22 round-trip flights starting on May 15. Most of the flights will be between Kansai International Airport in Osaka and a handful of major cities including Beijing, Bangkok and Hong Kong.
ANA did not say how much revenue it expected to generate from the flights or give financial details of its deal with ABX Air.

The discussion has primarily been on another message board. It's true that ABX and ANA made the agreement public about 3 months ago. ANA put out a press release in early February. I still haven't heard that JCAB approval has come through but I think the audits/inspections and paperwork are done.
There's still no agreement with the pilot group about scheduling the operation. Negotiations resume May 14. Supposedly getting close to a TA. I don't think they can build workable schedules under current contract, so if it starts up May 15 I suppose it will have to be management pilots.
Proffer awards for the next 4 767 classes will be posted May 9, after that we hopefully will have some replacement proffers which could trigger the call that Ultra's been waiting years for!

My sources tell me that they have reached an agreement for that effective with a new contract. To minimize time lost in deadheading and avoid a Japanese domicile, the schedules will be a 23 on 23 off rotation (X2 in a 90 day period) with 22 hours of extra pay per month

Unless something dramatic has happened that I haven't heard about, I don't think this will be done by side letter. The union's position has been that ANA scheduling rules must be incorporated in a full, ratified contract. On that point I'm sure there is broad agreement in the pilot group. 23 on/23 off is another matter, a number of pilots are opposed to that. I've heard we're close to TA on all issues except pay. Pay, as always, is a huge issue, possibly a deal breaker.
