Question Follow up

Thanks for all the information. It has helped focus the search. The wife doesn't drive and was wondering if any of the areas mentioned above would be better for someone that relies on being able to walk to basic services (grocery store, Starbucks, etc.)?

Good 7 - you're moving to CA, correct? If not, quite a few of us use Red Roof as a crashpad. $50 a night but there are 2 beds in each room and they don't care if you share rooms, so many of us end up paying $25 a night.

You'll probably get a VTO line within 6-8 months and then won't need a crashpad at all. Even when on reserve, you'll probably fly enough to make a rental more expensive than staying at Red Roof. There're about 8-10 of us there...

I was just down there and the area around I10 and Mountain Ave. seemed like a decent area with all the things you mentioned.

Yeah, I want to move out there so I can spend my days off out there for a year or six month to make an informed decision--whether Southern Calf. is a good fit for the wife and I. She teaches and wants to spend the summer after schools out getting to know that area.

". She teaches and wants to spend the summer after schools out getting to know that area."

Careful of which school district! A bud of mine is a teacher in Redlands and they go year round, as do an increasing number of schools in the area. So there go the three best things about being a teacher. (June, July and August)

It is relative. In San Diego, you couldn't touch a decent three bedroom condo for anywhere near $350K.....start at about $600K.

Consider some of the cities a little further to the south -- Corona might be nice and Murrieta/Temecula have good school districts. A decent commute from all but the cost of living will be lower.

Corona reminds me of Arizona. It looks very deserty if you like that.
