Liketoflyjets has a good round about answer. Using that term = basically someone who you can get along with during the suck. Long trips, deployments, readiness exercises, working and chill’n with someone who has your back. While all Guard units are different and have unique personalities if you will, they are potentially hiring a Wing Commander and looking at your future possibilities as an Instructor/Evaluator Pilot and what you bring to the table as a well rounded individual - selfless vs selfish it is the military after all and you end up in some interesting places flying more than point to point. It’s a long and arduous process and it’s not to be taken lightly as Uncle Sam does expect payback for his investment. Be prepared for what you are signing up for or signing over since it’s not all flying. With structure and rank comes responsibility. Military forums within this site has more specifics as well as Baseops, net if your serious.

Definitely forgot one key aspect when interviewing with the Guard or Reserve.. Not only are they interviewing you, you should be interviewing them (internally of course) to ensure a good fit. They are attempting to gain the best perspective on you within 30 min to an hour because of the long term commitment you will have with them or even another unit if you were to transfer later on. A decade is a commitment, but the training, experience and mission accomplished/sense of purpose cannot be rivaled for the most part. Careers vary, but mine was fortunate and an investment that is paying dividends. Definitely appreciate the opportunity. Now I casually roam the planet with better accommodations, less pressure and time to enjoy the key sites of other countries. Granted, this past month I was locked up tight at Yokota AB, Japan and Andersen AFB, Guam which brought me back a bit to those times.

Thanks for the insight, C17B74! I tried to do as much homework as possible, but not much info on the specifics like interviewing. Finishing up my degree and starting to get my eggs in a row for the opportunity. Hoping it works!
