Ive got a question 401k

Who is the 401k administered through? Fidelity, Vanguard etc? Also, above and beyond the $19,500 IRS limit (pretax) on 401k contributions, will the company administrator allow pilots to contribute after tax contributions up to the other, less known limit of $55,000 total?

What I know of ATI's contribution structure means it will be impossible for your combined contributions to reach the $55,000 limit. I don't remember the ATI schedule, but it wasn't any better than 50% match on up to 10% of gross. If you made $200k, the max company contribution would be $10,000 and your max contribution would be $19,500 for a total of $29,500.

Please point me in the right direction if I have incomplete information.

Edit: Looks like I was the one that was uninformed. I doubt ATI allows after-tax contributions up to the cap, but someone with better info will have to get you an answer on that.

At my current company, the contract specifically does not allow for after tax contributions. Im guessing its up to the company to "flip the switch" with the administrator of the 401k (Fidelity etc). It probably costs the company more on the contract or something like that.

With some of the Captains in the high income bracket, id be surprised if they didnt allow.

on the other hand it is peak and we’re flying our little tails off and perhaps are grumpy.

Is this somehow different than what the training is like at Frontier or JB? Or are you just reiterating what is standard in all of 121?

I honestly have no idea what JB or Frontiers training is like. Yes like any 121 there is a mountain of informational to review and internalize. We have amazing instructors that will guide you through the process, however we don’t really spoon feed you the knowledge. It’s more “here is the FCOM, put it in your head”. The regionals I worked for often took time to explain little details and how those fit in the bigger picture. On the other hand we give you the big picture expecting you already have the little details figured out (ex: what’s an op spec, what is a controlling RVR, derived alternate minimums, etc). If you have questions they will happily explain it, otherwise the topics are covered but not dissected.

Clear as mud? Certainly we are not born with this knowledge in our heads. And we all started somewhere. However if a candidate doesn’t have these concepts cemented down then it will be very challenging and they will have a lot more work ahead to learn it all. Lots of digging to figure it out.
