AMS is a formal crew base. With FedEx closing the CGN base, don't know of any other U.S. carriers that have a formal base in Europe. WGA may be lacking a lot of things, but if you live in Europe, particularly in Northwest Europe, a short commute to AMS, versus having to rely on jumpseating or buying tickets to the States, goes a long way to towards reducing stress, increasing time off at home, and bettering QOL.

The Western Global AMS base was formed as a reward for some long-serving Dutch pilots who help with anti-ALPA activities and the recruitment of foreign contract pilots. You will not get a foreign base (other than possibly ICN) as a new hire. The flight operations managers will promise anything to get you to join, but when your training is complete, HR will never change your base away from the US address they force you to maintain. Many have already resigned over this issue.

Other than ICN, WG doesn’t fly into to its overseas bases anyway. You’ll start/end your duty with a long, middle seat economy deadhead to wherever they need you most.

I've had trouble finding info about UPS's intra-Europe routes. (Did I miss that forum thread?) If I couldn't hold them as a new hire it wouldn't be an option for me.

Thoughts on how easy it'll be for young guys to hold FedEx CGN routes they switch to the 777 and commute from MEM? I'd just commute from home.

I'm guessing Atlas and Kalitta would be the safest bets. Seems like guys have moderate success asking scheduling to start and end trips in Europe.

Anyone living this life right now that can speak to the realities of it?

Thanks!!
National has world wide home basing. But, economy on returns home.
13 un-interrupted days off per month. You get 11 at Atlas because you have to commute on your days off.

I average 15 days off when I count my commute days. Try harder next time.

Commuting isn't really a day off, regardless of who pays for it or how you get there. It's time granted to the company, for which you aren't paid. To say a travel day is a day off is a bit like calling perdiem part of your salary. It's not.

That is what I meant. I averaged 15 off when I count commuting days as days on.

Per diem is not salary, but it is part of your compensation.

Interesting…I got AMS immediately as a new hire, and yes, I am American. Have yet to ever sit in a middle seat.

That’s a good point, it may happen here and there or never at this outfit although it might have been embellished perhaps on his point. At our outfit I actually thought I had $1K in the bag per our contract when they couldn’t find a biz or better seat on a DH following my operating leg (overseas). It was economy before I left, but upon arrival it was biz daaaang. Was worth $1K that day to be passed out even in a middle propped up by other zombies. Definitely not my style and enjoy nice rides, but for some odd reason I was looking forward to filling out that form just to say I did it once… fatigue might be an issue next time.

And we've already got an Airbnb there so it makes sense. Whichever way it goes, I'll be happy to share my experiences here for future guys like me.
The good thing about Germany if you end at atlas is the ID tickets with Lufthansa. So it’s fairly easy to get stateside.

Someone hired today may have a different experience. If they won't put it in writing and sign their name to it at the time of hire, I really wouldn't count on ever getting an overseas base other than ICN.
