Actually, if you're trying to max out your pay in a four-week bid month, and you have say, a 14-day vacation, bidding VTO works pretty good. For every vacation day you have during a month you were awarded a VTO line, you will recieve 6 hours pay. So, a 14-day vacation equates to 88 hours of pay, and the entire month off for a 4-week bid month. Not bad.

"Why would you bid VTO in a vacation month anyway? There's no positive to doing so."

Since you want to know... Some of us aren't senior enough to get what we want when we bid. Reserve is going pretty senior in the seat, and I could not hold reserve lines that did not have carry-over. Knowing that our VTO lines have been getting reserve, once I bid the reserve lines without carryover, VTO was the next best option. I never thought I wouldn't get leveled.

Why not bid reserve lines that do have carryover and protect min days off in the subsequent month? Not saying you would get one, but it is an option you have denied yourself.

Default Line trips vs reserve leveling

Regular trips (carryover for example) get leveled when you complete the trip..... Reserve trips get leveled when you block out on a trip. The gotcha here is when you have R days immediately following a regular trip. You can be assigned a trip BEFORE you are leveled for the carryover trip and thus be assigned out of leveling order. Best to ALWAYS have a couple of days off in between a trip which you will get leveled and the start of r days.
