I think there is some sort of parameter that sets off an alert when you call in sick- not sure what it is- maybe over three times in one year? I think then your ACP looks at your history and decides if he wants to follow up. Anyone know for sure? I think most ACP's are just trying to see if things are ok, I don't think it's a witch hunt.
We have gotten emails from management stating we are NOT to call in sick for doctor appointments, sick kids, sick spouses, etc. They want us to call the ACP and tell him what is happening. If your kid is sick, or your wife, that might put you in a state where stress and worry would affect your flying. So why the big stink from mangement anyway? Any one of those situation from the FAA's "I'M SAFE" acronym means a sick call.
Illness
Medication
Stress
Alcohol
Fatigue
Eating
There will always be guys that "abuse" it. We shouldn't all get screwed.
And despite that email from "O", you do not have to explain anything. Fatigue and flying is in our contract, and it says nothing in there about explaining yourself. If you can't sleep, you can't sleep! If you call in fatigued, isn't the reason obvious? You WERE FATIGUED!!!!!

When I was in the right seat of the 72, I got the call from DM when I hit the magic number 5.... He got into the if you are calling sick to extend vacation or if you are six with us you should still be sick if you are going on Mil leave. None of the situations applied to me, I was actually sick, but the call was total BS, and seemed that, since I came up in his daily report he was going to give me the company line.
FWIW, it depends on your ACP, but big brother is watching, because VIPS automatically sends the report.

Quoting an ACP e-mail from last year, "VIPS Sick Report for 7 or More Sick Calls in 365 Days. The average FedEx pilot calls in sick about 3½ times per year, so this report identifies pilots that call in at twice the average..."
In other words, if you call in sick 7 or more times in any rolling 365 day period, VIPS will automatically generate a report to management. A report is also generated if you call in sick within 4 hours of the showtime of a trip.

Well, if you're out for more than month and want to get paid, you better call in yourself!

An email like that is worthy of this:

Unless it's changed in the last 4 months or so, the ACP's/RCP's get a report every morning listing all crew members that have called in 5 times or more in the last 365 days. It also lists crew members that called in within 4 hours of showtime for a trip. Usually they look at them and give a quick scrub of the info and look for "abnormalities." If a guy has a history of calling of the first few or last few days of reserve string, that is usually a good "abnormality." You won't automatically get a call, but depending on the situation and the respective ACP/RCP you could get one for 5 and you might not get on for 8. If I was on the Bus, I would be careful. Sorry to hijack the thread.

So, as much as I'd like to relate a story about how an ACP told my new-hire class that sick kids with a spouse that had to work was NOT a valid use of sick time (the response is a different thread)......
This once was a discussion of 727 and DC-10 guys, and how many are going to actually go through training.
I looked at the 727 training letter today, but I hadn't looked at it in a long time so I can't tell if anything changed.
Anyone have any info ( or rumors) that can move this thing along?
