You guys are both wrong.
The version I got was that UPS has convinced Boeing to re-open production line for the "NG" DC-8s. They will have new and improved dials with larger numbers so old guys past age 80 can still "plumb" on it.

March 1, 2008 UPS is expected to announce an order for 25 TG-770 JetShips with options for 25 more http://www.fastshipatlantic.com/.
Rumor has it that Art Luby has been retained by the Teamsters to ensure that no Fastship Pilots end up on the IPA Seniority List. Talk about conflict of interest: IPA, ALPA and now Teamsters. A flow through however is being negotiated between the IPA and the Teamsters to allow 65 year old UPS pilots with 3 or more ex-wives to become boat drivers. This is an amazing opportunity for the IPA Membership!
Just as the development of jet travel overcame naysayers' objections (jets are too expensive, will not perform, fuel is too costly, people and freight will not pay a premium), so too will FastShip's transformational technology create new products, new services, new markets and new ways of doing business.
With advanced hull design and propulsion systems, our JetShips will be able to make the trans-Atlantic crossing in four days even in rough seas—half the time of even the most advanced ships today. Our specialized terminal operations and unique cargo handling systems will allow ships to be unloaded and reloaded in a remarkable six hours, speeding the delivery of our customers' cargo and allowing each ship to triple the productivity of conventional ships. The result will be an unparalleled level of time-definite service for our customers at a cost far below airfreight.

Actually, as part of the UPS conspiracy to get rid of the over 60 FEs before the law changes, UPS is starting a crash development program for the DC-8 along the same lines that FedEx took with the DC-10. UPS is going to start conversion of the first DC-8 into the MD-8 with a two person flight crew. I know that some Canadian DC-8s were delivered with two person crews but they were never certified in the US to be flown by only two crewmembers. This conversion will look similar to the MD-11 cockpit and will feature computer controlled actuators that pull on the cables in place of the engineer pulling on cables manually.

NO NO NO!! UPS is going to retrofit the 8 with the handicap ramps you see on busses and retirement home vans. And since they won't be able to get out very quickly in an emergency, ejection seat for the FE. No parachute though.
