2B,
Have you been in touch with your sponsor or called HR? I would think that is a little long to have been left dog paddleing.

Most senior poolie

03/05 interview, pool letter 06/05

Don't really know if I will ever get called and I'm not counting on it. Yes, I've had my sponsor call and have talked to HR a couple times since being in the pool but still haven't received the "magic" call. If I ever do get the call I know I will cry tears of joy, of course say yes, bust my ass in training and flying but I'm not counting on it.

Chris

ps there is also a couple other guys who are in the pool as long as me and still haven't gotten called

Freight Dog 12-26-2007 03:49 PM

Chris, have you showed up to any job fairs where UPS attends?

ERJ Jay 12-26-2007 06:39 PM

Just put my trunks on.
Swimming since 12/07

Larcifer 12-26-2007 08:12 PM

Since 3/06

Recs have recently been in touch with P.D. and all is is well with the swim. Told to be patient. Have to say though I'm not holding my breath any longer. I have a feeling the ship has left port without me:D

I talked to BT while he was driving the crew van. He said they had enough in the pool for 2 classes FWIW.

So BT is a bus driver now? Is that because of the age 65 gig--they had to put him in the driver's seat again?

How many are in each training class on average?

Averages are useless, the mean usually more accurate, but here still useless. Hopefully this shows a past history. Majority of the MD-11 hired directly to ANC. Almost all the rest of them are now displaced to ANC in either the MD-11 or 747-4 or probably soon to be. The 5 DC-8 F/O's hired in 2007 are ANC bound. Essentially, all of the 2007 hires will end up in ANC. The 727 is gone. The 747 classisc (100-200's) will be gone by Jan 2009. Around 90 of those crewmembers to be displaced. The DC-8 is starting to get parked. Rumors of between 6-8 in 2008 to go to the storage at Roswell (ROW) One went the other day (703) and they have scheduled another, but it hasn't left SDF yet. Rumor is to start displacing DC-8 crews now rather than wait.
Looks like 2008 is a clean up the crews year for the big musical chair dance we are going to hold. Of course, UPS getting 7 747-400's and 5 MD-11's this year, so ANC is getting bigger. Also, in 2009, UPS starts getting the first of the 27 new 767's through 2012 (6.5 per year average <g>)

Class Date
11/05/07 4 747-400, 5 MD-11
10/15/07 3 747-400, 14 MD-11
10/01/07 4 747-400, 4 MD-11
09/17/07 3 MD-11
08/27/07 7 747-400, 1 757, 4 MD-11
07/31/07 2 747-400, 9 757, 4 MD-11
07/02/07 10 757, 11 MD-11
06/04/07 3 DC-8, 4 757, 8 MD-11, 6 A-300
05/16/07 2 DC-8, 8 757, 7 MD-11
2007 Totals: 235
2006 Totals: 170

Any thoughts on what all the displacements might mean for hiring? Still hearing around 50 new guys this year?

SaltyDog 02-22-2008 08:26 PM

Harley,
They have closed the HR shop you went through at the Training Center. They do this from time to time and reconstitute when they will hire again. IMO, which isn't worth anything, is that UPS is unsure what they are going to do depending on what the 60-63 years olds bid. They will have to award bids to cover the 12 new airplanes coming, but also absorb the crews from the planes leaving. 9 747 classics and several DC8's being parked (not sure if UPS knows the final number yet. Crew wise, I'm guessing it's a wash.
The real challenge is going to be training all the displaced and changing crews. They may actually need some new crews, that is where I would guess they would draw from you backpaddlers. (Hopefully), but it would be late summer to early fall (I'm only guessing based on possible training center loadout)
Good Luck!

I thought the displacement bid would be out by now. Salty, any word from your parts on this?

No, it's like the merger proposed between DAL/NWA.<g> Everyone knows they are talking, word is it will come out "next week", but few know what really is being said behind closed doors. We just know the gig is up, they need to move some of those 747 classic folks sooner than later to avoid a repeat of the long vacations some of the 727 crews received. They have airplanes coming..... They dont want to train over peak (theoretically) so it needs to be done within the next 30 days.

You are correct. That doesn't preclude me from my desire to be SDF based. I am also curious because it might provide some insight into the timeline of being on the whale.

Thanks for the update Salty. I wish I could count on getting a class date some time in the future. Being in the pool is of course better than being turned down at the interview, but not knowing if I'll ever get called for a class is hard. I didn't think my interview went all that well and I have no idea how competitive I am for a class slot when they start up again. It's hard having the life in a kind of holding pattern while waiting for the call. I'm looking forward to getting to Anchorage and settling down.

It's truly a holding with no EFC ...

v2plus25 02-23-2008 10:11 PM

Keep the faith Harley. They HAVE to hire again soon. We're just too short not to.

Vman 02-23-2008 10:58 PM

SD,

Do you expect the 767 to be growth or DC8 fleet replacement?

V

Precontact 02-24-2008 02:59 AM

They said the new 767s were not the DC-8 replacement, but then if they're not, what is?

bifff15 02-24-2008 03:46 AM

I think the 767 will replace the 8, and that we will continue to buy used 747-400s to fill the gap left by the A380. However, the wild card is we seem to lag FedEx but end up doing about the same thing they do.
If we do end up with overseas domiciles I do hope we end up with a better FDA than they did.

Freighter Captain 02-24-2008 04:46 AM

If we followed FedEx, then we would have no 747-400s in our fleet, nor any 767-300ERs or 757-200s.

FedEx is much more aggressive in a business sense. But when it comes to fleet decisions and foresight, I think that UPS runs circles around Memphis.

Precontact 02-24-2008 05:07 AM

We're going to get more 747s or maybe the 777 along with more 767s. We're just slow to announce these things.

Why do they still have the FEXw requirement? I've got a MD-11 type rating but no current FEXw and the online app won't let me apply.

This has been beat to death in prior threads about UPS hiring ...

I had to go take my 5th FEX before I could schedule an interview in late 2006. I was current and typed in the B757. I now have a collection of FEX writtens that will most likely collect dust and snow ... ;)

I got the job early 2007, worth every penny for the FEX ... as NIKE used to say, just do it ! Or plan on doing it when hiring resumes if the requirement is still there.

As to the question "why the FEX is still a requirement" ... Because they want it there ... ;)

That's all that any of us really know ... :D And all you need to know

Later, Brown CC

FEX or no FEX, that is the question...

I interviewed in August 2007, still swimming, and did not have to re-take the FEX (last testing date 2000). Several brown friends talked with HR and said the 121 exemption was allowed, I double-checked with HR and they confirmed this, therefore I did not have to retake. Was accepted into the pool. Sounds like the rules changed...
