UPS-What's new?

.On a side note, the IPA had a blurb about wanting IPA pilots/aircraft to fly intra Europe flights that UPS contracts out now due to the relaxation of "open skies". Any news/word on whether anything is happening with that?

Doesn't look like it is going to happen. The company made some network changes to ensure that the flights would be classified as cabotage instead of open skies.

My personal prediction is that if market stays where it is, they will be high value targets for razor blades (more palatable if they become beer cans though). The ones being parked with stated purpose to be used for peak likely won't return for peak. Look for planning to make the call by the June/July 747 classic displacement bid. If DC-8 crews show on the big D'list, then predict they are permanently gone and will accelerate parking 8's in 2009. I personally don't think the fuel burn is much higher than the A300 or 757's for comparable payload/speed. Them thar small CFM's not turbojets.

It was from either someone on the scope committee or the EB, I forget which. I don't recall the details but I do recall them saying that the Icelandic flights didn't have enough volume under our contract, and that there had been a convenient reworking of the network to ensure that there would be some local packages on the other flights. There may have been one exception, Athens. Bottom line is that I think you are going to see a lot of foot dragging and stalling for the year that the contract gives them to turn over routes, and then a large sigh of dissapointment from the pilot group. If you have any questions, call someone at the union office for details.
