1) How long, generally, does it take to get guys awarded a position into the schoolhouse?
2) How long, generally, does it take to get everyone trained on a given system bid.
3) If, hypothetically, there were original vacancies left after the displacement bid, what do you think the time frame would be for the schoolhouse to start calling people in from the pool.
While this may seem overly optimistic, I was wondering what time frame you would see someone from the pool going to the schoolhouse if there were still original vacancies left after the up coming displacement bid. Any ideas would be appreciated.
The reason I ask is there is an opportunity to sign a six month contract with a contracting service in the event that I get furloughed from my present employer and I would hate to have signed that contract in September only to be offered a class at UPS in October. I know, overly optimistic, but I can dream right :-).
There is not an easy answer. The minimum time from a Vacancy bid announcement to the first class is 4 weeks. If the Vacancy bid is coupled with a Displacement bid, that adds another 2 weeks. A lot of times the bid comes out just in time to make inputs into the next available class opening, presently the case for the 747-400. I think the next class opening for the 400 is 28 July, and thus 16 June (next Monday) is the expected opening of the Vacancy bid, which has been planned to be coupled with a Displacement bid (thus requiring 6 weeks from opening to first class date). I think all of us are awaiting anxiously to see if this plan will change, due to the DHL announcement. A week ago, when I talked to Manpower Planning, they didn't have enough information to predict any change. Originally Posted by ERJ Jay

That maximum time to class can extend up to several months. In our last Vacancy bid, which opened April 21, most classes started in June and July, but there are classes in August, September, and October.
After starting class, it can takes a 7-8 weeks for ground school, sims, and IOE, but I would like to get that confirmed by others for better confidence in that number.
UPS, with its desire not to be overstaffed after all the training is done, has to time the training to make sure one fleet/seat isn't left short because too many leave before those entering are trained. This is most acute now in the DC8 FE position. I think most of us are guessing that the next new hires will be needed in the DC8 FE position. The DC8 FE position has been training at a rate of 8 per month, and I think they have classes planned through September, but I could also use an update on this. I think if this next bid goes as planned, it may add a couple more months of FE training to the pipeline.
Next week, we will know a lot more as far as the Vacancy/Displacement plan in the near term. There is a definite need for more ANC 400 FO's, and I don't think the 747-Classic will stay around beyond Christmas.
As you know, the wild card is how and when is UPS going to carry the extra volume from DHL.
