Quote: Roberto you seem to be a man in the know so here's some questions in regards to timing of this system bid and possible training slots:

1) How long, generally, does it take to get guys awarded a position into the schoolhouse?
2) How long, generally, does it take to get everyone trained on a given system bid.
3) If, hypothetically, there were original vacancies left after the displacement bid, what do you think the time frame would be for the schoolhouse to start calling people in from the pool.

While this may seem overly optimistic, I was wondering what time frame you would see someone from the pool going to the schoolhouse if there were still original vacancies left after the up coming displacement bid. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The reason I ask is there is an opportunity to sign a six month contract with a contracting service in the event that I get furloughed from my present employer and I would hate to have signed that contract in September only to be offered a class at UPS in October. I know, overly optimistic, but I can dream right :-).
There is not an easy answer. The minimum time from a Vacancy bid announcement to the first class is 4 weeks. If the Vacancy bid is coupled with a Displacement bid, that adds another 2 weeks. A lot of times the bid comes out just in time to make inputs into the next available class opening, presently the case for the 747-400. I think the next class opening for the 400 is 28 July, and thus 16 June (next Monday) is the expected opening of the Vacancy bid, which has been planned to be coupled with a Displacement bid (thus requiring 6 weeks from opening to first class date). I think all of us are awaiting anxiously to see if this plan will change, due to the DHL announcement. A week ago, when I talked to Manpower Planning, they didn't have enough information to predict any change.

That maximum time to class can extend up to several months. In our last Vacancy bid, which opened April 21, most classes started in June and July, but there are classes in August, September, and October.

After starting class, it can takes a 7-8 weeks for ground school, sims, and IOE, but I would like to get that confirmed by others for better confidence in that number.

UPS, with its desire not to be overstaffed after all the training is done, has to time the training to make sure one fleet/seat isn't left short because too many leave before those entering are trained. This is most acute now in the DC8 FE position. I think most of us are guessing that the next new hires will be needed in the DC8 FE position. The DC8 FE position has been training at a rate of 8 per month, and I think they have classes planned through September, but I could also use an update on this. I think if this next bid goes as planned, it may add a couple more months of FE training to the pipeline.

Next week, we will know a lot more as far as the Vacancy/Displacement plan in the near term. There is a definite need for more ANC 400 FO's, and I don't think the 747-Classic will stay around beyond Christmas.

As you know, the wild card is how and when is UPS going to carry the extra volume from DHL.

Quote: I also saw 34 as the number on a Maintenance planning list a week ago. The list also showed 5 more going to ROW this month, and another in July, which would bring the total down to 28.

That was before the DHL announcement. I'll check the list again Wednesday to see if it has changed. I don't know how accurate or up-to-date this list is, but it does identify the planes by tail number and date scheduled for storage, and it has been accurate on ROW inputs that occurred earlier this year.
I checked this morning, and the maintenance parking plan available on the UPS net has not been updated for a month.

However, in checking the outdated plan against the Flight Information link, there were 2 planned deliveries to ROW within the last week that did not go. There are 4 more that were planned between now and the end of July that are not scheduled on the Flight Information link any more. As a cross check, a 747-classic that is scheduled for delivery to ROW on the 17th does show up on the ROW schedule, and in open time.

That does seem to be confirmation that UPS has stopped DC8 deliveries to ROW, with 34 airframes currently remaining. When and if and how many DC8's start heading back from ROW to SDF remains to be discovered.

Roberto,

Thanks for the info. As a treading water member of the Pool, I would be happy to dust off the FE rating and go back to the 'coffee maker' position on the DC-8.

Still smimmin',
JP

Quote: And yes I did move into my igloo near midtown ANC. And yes, that's a picture of me after my ex-wife said to me, "Why don't you go outside, the polar bears make great playmates.

I miss her like a rash.

ps. Thanks Roberto for the info.
Take my ex-wife, she's in ANC and always on the lookout for sugar-daddies....

Silly question... If you don't sign the contract there will be no hiring. If you do, the call will come the day after you sign it...

Send me a picture of her.

If you're in the picture, do you mind using a sharpie, to cover yourself up.

Just kidding,
