Default UPS Aircraft

I've seen many threads on the opinion that UPS is in need of capacity. Is this still the case?? Are aircraft that difficult to find these days? The state of the industry, bankruptcies... Aren't aircraft available due to these things?? Any reason why the 777 was never looked at or considered? What will the DC-8 eventually be replaced by and when? Will be nice, I would think, for UPS to have an all two pilot fleet.

Supposedly the 777 has been looked at recently due to ever higher fuel costs. It has awesome performance numbers, something like what the MD-11 can carry but around 1500 nm further. The difficulty lies in finding cargo conversion slots, not the a/c themselves. Just ask FedEx about the 757 conversion, which has taken longer then expected. Very interesting times in the cargo a/c arena.

Yes, aircraft are available, However, UPS wants to buy at 25% less than the bottom dollar. If UPS were offered planes for free, maybe they would take the deal if you offered to pay for the maintenance for a year <g>
The rest of it, Who knows. They don't until they have arrived. I'm biased to 3 man/person crews. More pilot jobs for everyone.

N290UP - MD11. Flew that one the other day to the Kong. You can sign me off for 6 and 12 month recurrent. That sucka is a flying AQP testbed.

I'll take a free USA Today and free drinks anyday. 25% off drinks works too. I may be as dumb as UPS management, but I can put away a lot of drinks for 25 % off.

I'm wondering if UPS were to approach Boeing and research winglets on the 777 and then fly it using re-disptach flight plans on long haul flights like the last 3 airlines I worked at, if that would jack up the range vis-a-vis the MD11, to 2000 miles greater. 2000 miles is approx. the same distance between Baltimore and LAX.

Oh well, two aspirins and back to bed, I think that was a roofie, not viagara that I took last night.

Ok, I admit, I'm bored on the layover and happy-hour doesnt start for 5 more hours, but Grant you ask a good question. Reference the UPS/DHL announcement it was announced that UPS may bring some of the Mighty "8"'s out of the desert. Except for the fuel costs, I would think the company really likes that airframe. Just a guess on my part.

Also in the cargo thread you can probably see that UPS will start deliveries of 767-300s in 2009-almost 30 in the original order. I speculate there may be more down the road due to the failure of Boeing to secure the Air Force's tanker order...just speculation on my part.

Hope that scratches the surface of your question...

There may be more 76 availability than that, considering some of the lift UPS is gaining in a DHL deal comes directly at the expense of ABX, the largest 767 cargo fleet in the world.

Sniper,

I'm not sure, but I think I flew some of those ABX 767-200s when I flew for TWA.

I think they were long gone when your airline acquired my former airline.

What is American's long term plans for their 767-300's ?
