brownie,
The 8 issue predated the DHL announcement. I think it has more to do with the stated UPS objectives from last OCT/NOV to pull alot of the 8's outta ROW to use for peak 2008+, then, it would depend on volume. Again, all info from late last year. Additionally, UPS ordered all the 767's that start showing up next year. I personally was curious to see if UPS followed through on reducing present crews to staff the new 767's ordered in 2007. It looks like they have decided not too reduce to much. They have maintained the staffing levels on the 8 even when they parked the 8's as they originally stated. The $64 question that even UPS didn't know, exactly how many they wanted beyond 2009. I suspect they wanted to ebb and flow the fleet, park some in ROW and bring back out for peak each year till aircraft removed from service.

You are correct sir! Also, the company has 24 months AFTER the deal is signed. Nothing prevents the company from outsourcing all this volume for 23months all the while figuring out how to minimize the air volume. Especially in these days of huge fuel costs. Do not forget that UPS is in the top 5 companies in number of railcars owned. Right now, we have a lot of volume that is not "air" that moves by air. This company excels at cost analysis. They'll figure out a way to keep the vast majority of this volume away from the IPA. If we get 20 DC8 equivalents out of this "mega" deal, I'll be amazed. Kinda a glum outlook, but to them its just bidness.

One more question. If ups fails to transfer the flying to us after 24 months is there a cash out for ipa pilots like we had during the menlo fiasco if so i hope it's big because this is huge compare to menlo.

I would think that it would be better to have 777Fs based in the lower 48. Isn't it designed to fly SDF/MEM - PVG/HKG, etc? It's alot more capable than the MD-11, I thought they could eliminate the tech stop in ANC because of the improved numbers. I guess time shall tell...

There won't be a single person under 60 flying the 777.......no matter where they base it!

Wrong.

You'll have to have some babysitters to comply with the FARs.

I may be off here, but I thought that it was 12 months (see Menlo) and that was only in the event of merger, acquisition, or purchase. For the 24 I saw mentioned I think that they are going to have to come to us for some help (read: midterm negotiation)

I was in the training center last week and I saw them stocking the vending machines with Depends!

Question: What does the cockpit smell like after two 60+ year olds get done flying it? Depends....
