The fact is ABX/ASTAR pilots dont want to hear UPS pilots gloating about how this is a good deal and the UPS pilots dont want to hear from ABX/ASTAR pilots that its UPS's fault (although I did post on another thread that if I were UPS I would pass....speaking of management of course not pilots, as they dont have a choice) so lets just drop the crap! I do have a question for those of us that are about to get kicked to the curb.....what if they (DHL) stay with us....what do we have in the long run??? A company that hates its contractors or do we just forget and give each other a big hug?? Dont get me wrong I want to keep my job, but any idea what life would be like?? I suspect that as a bottom feeder I will be gone no matter what. Take this as an honest question and dont ream me a new one.

All true Ultra. As to what would happen if DHL stayed with us? I have no idea. I lost the love when Yellow came to town and FUBAR'ed everything. I don't care what they feel about me. What I do care about is making sure we do everything we can to try to make sure our paychecks keep coming in. The DPWN fuzzy math has to be exposed for what it is. Here's hoping it will be!

A day after Ohio's congressional delegation called on German Chancellor Angela Merkel to halt DHL's plan to abandon its Wilmington air hub, the head of DHL's German parent said it has no alternative but to proceed, according to newspaper reports. Frank Appel, chief executive officer of Deutsche Poste World Net, reportedly told the German daily newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and The Wall Street Journal that DHL is losing $5 million a day in the United States, and that even more jobs would eventually be lost if it dropped its proposed plan to outsource its U.S. air transport operations to rival United Parcel Service. The proposed deal with Atlanta-based UPS (NYSE: UPS) would shift flight operations from Wilmington to UPS's hub in Louisville, resulting in a loss of more than 8,000 jobs in Clinton County. Most of those jobs are at ABX Air and ASTAR Air Cargo, which provide package sorting and air transport for DHL out of Wilmington. DHL itself has more than 40,000 employees in its U.S. operations. Opponents of the deal with UPS have called for a federal antitrust investigation. Two options. You can forget any others. Either it goes through or DHL pulls out and regroups for a later deal. None of the congress critters have even hinted at any accounting problems-that is a non-player. That poodle won't hunt. |

Everyone expects the employees to fight for their jobs. Any person in their right mind would do the same. I would fight tooth and nail to keep my job including writing and calling my congressman. With that being said, go talk to any lawyer with any anti-trust experience and you would realize that there is no case. The Democratic congress can call all the hearings they want, they cannot stop a deal between a vendor and a company. It is unfortunate that so many will lose there job, but all DHL has to say in front of the committee is that if the deal gets blocked, they will just pull out of the US market all together. Now you are really down to 2 delivery companies in the US, and even more people out of work. So in theory, DHL could argue that if the deal fails, there would be even less competition in the US shipping industry. Isn't that part of the whole anti-trust argument? HMMMM lawyers.......

And while jsled may not be a marvin mainliner (but I suspect he is/was), a disproportionate number of UAL pilots have been first class cornholio's for like...forever. In those cases (and in those cases only) it is ironic to see them on the verge on liquidation. And while I'll never relish another pilot's demise, if anyone deserves a lesson in airline life it's many UAL pilots...not UPS (many/most have paid more dues and been refugees of more "legacies" than any UAL pilot will ever dream of). Jsled, get a grip...perhaps on a job application. Our time may well come again, but not in your lifetime. He can yammer all he wants. I guess he felt the need to put a lowly freight dog like me in my place. Whatever! I called him a butthead, so maybe we're even. :D |
