Default FDX-PDO Bump

What's the etiquette on a PDO Bump? Does the bumped pilot need to give his/her approval?

Thanks, Veez

I always ask. You might end up really not doing them a favor.

I've never heard of any "official" policy but it seems as though calling/emailing the proposed bump-ee for their opinion would be at least good manners.

A friend of mine tried to bump a guy on a Flint hub turn.

The guy refused, unless he could also get the per diem money. Said he needed it. He was a 727 captain.

Nothing like getting stuck in MEM on your own dime for the night for a PDO bump..

If the question is: Does a guy getting bumped have to agree to it? Of course, for a personal type bump. Otherwise we'd have guys getting involuntarily bumped off of their flights with D/H's.

If the question is: Does the guy getting bumped have to give his approval in VIPS? No. The bumpee can put it all in, last time I did it.

I believe the only way you can be involuntarily bumped is for training: IOE, checkride, etc. In other cases the bumpee has to agree to the bump. Either the bumper or bumpee can do the PDO bump thru VIPS.

I've actually had several guys tell me they wouldn't do it unless they got the per diem also!*? Are you kidding me? Anybody who wants to fly (ALL) my trips while I stay home can keep my per diem!!!!

Tell him no sweat. Then send him a dollar and apologize for spending the rest of his per diem to buy a round of drinks for the Swedish Bikini Team that happened to be in the hotel bar. I'm sure he'll understand.

I've heard just the opposite. Submitting a PDO bump always requires the other party's approval.

The company putting you in sub is different.

8. A flex instructor/PCA may bump another pilot from his assigned trip(s) for PDO purposes to the extent required to maintain proficiency in the crew status in which he conducts training, and the following shall apply.

a. No pilot may be PDO bumped without his consent...

10. Per Diem Only Bumping (Non-Training).

a. A pilot shall have the ability to bump another pilot from his trip with that pilot's consent, if the submission meets all contract and legality parameters. Submissions for PDO bumps shall be submitted at least 2 hours prior to showtime of the affected trip. Submissions after 0900 LBT on the day preceding the affected trip shall be confirmed through VIPS. Submissions within 2 hours of showtime may be processed at the.....

Always ask if you can PDO bump. Consider it the same protocol as when you jumpseat, ie, always ask the Captain the jumpseat, even if it's at FedEx, and especially if it's at another carrier. After all, the guy might have a BNR (bunny of non-record) at the out station, and large plans for the night.

Gunter, I don't believe that there's even a VIPS menu option to give your approval for your being PDO bumped. Only a option for submitting the bump. There is however, an option for a mutual PDO bump, which is probably what you were referring to. But for a simple PDO bump, it only requires one person to submit.
