Default UPS DC-8s on ramp in SDF

Is there any truth to the rumor that there are four DC-8s on the ramp in Louisville awaiting inspections (back from storage) to begin flying again for peak and also possibly for the DHL contract?

I was down there a few days ago, but I didn't notice any old birds back from the desert.

I've heard conflicting rumors as to their status. They were grounded per the FAA for missing maintenance logs from before we owned them supposedly. I heard that they have been released as well, but they were still buttoned up when I saw them last month.

Heard from a mechanic a few months back they were grounded by the FAA for paperwork issues from way back when. Don't know if they have been cleared to fly yet or not.

The original plan as explained by UPS management a year ago was to temporarily park DC-8's on UPS ramps/ROW in 2008 to be used for peak 2008. Keep crews about same level to be able to fly peak and contingency lift. All previous to the FAA paperwork comments, all prior to the DHL discussion. I believe UPS is actually just executing the original plan witb the 8's right now. The DHL discussion resulted in UPS making a decision to bring more DC-8's out of storage. As of now, believe they have the plan to continue to bring the extra 8's out (if DHL musters) but have kept the execution to only those they originally planned for peak 2008.
Am not sure of the FAA paperwork issue, but I believe it is way overblown.
Good rumour fodder though <g>

I know there were a couple of 8's grounded in RFD a month or so ago for the same reason. The paperwork issues were fixed with those however. Don't know if the 8's in SDF are still grounded, but they at one point, were grounded for paperwork issues.

I was told by a DC8 ACP that the FAA agreed to approve for use the tails with the paperwork problem after completion of a C check on each aircraft.

I think they swapped a few tails around, but didn't change the plan of storing birds for peak 2008. UPS knew they were going to stick the C check birds in storage as well. Passed through SAT awhile back and chatted with the UPS Manager who told me the extra DC-8's coming out for a possible DHL deal was the bigger challenge due to the extra heavy checks that were deferred for cost reasons prior to storage. Makes sense, only do the check if you need the airframe.

Picked up an Airbus out of SAT about 3 weeks ago and saw a DC-8 there that was still wrapped up. Talked to one of the SAS managers and he said that the plane had been brought in from the desert and that they were trying to work it into the maintenance line and get it going again.
