Didn't a part falling from a Continental DC-10 doom the Concorde taking off out of Paris?

Yes there was a piece of the cowling laying on the runway and that burst Concorde's tire which lead to the rest.

Ironically, the normal pre-Concorde runway inspection was not performed because the CDG fire department was conducting a fire drill.

I heard that the flight continued all the way to Oakland and landed safely. Did the pilots even know if those pieces had fallen off? If so, wouldn't a preventative landing have been a good idea.

Default Flies good on two!

Several years ago, a 727 lost an engine near PHX and pressed on to the west coast. Only problem--they had really LOST the engine!

Unless the loss of the cowling set up some sort of a vibration the crew would have no way of knowing that the parts were gone. There is no "the cowling just departed the airplane" warning light.

I will never forget the day that the left front tire departed my car while on the way to the airport. And I was going in on MY DAY OFF!!!!!!!!!!

Since the cowling is painted purple, this was the engine on the back of the DC 10.. I guess that would be the number 2 engine.. The engines on the wing are not painted purple..
