UPS was poised to hire as a result of DHLs deal to have UPS haul its domestic packages. But I guess this announcement means the pending deal to have UPS haul DHL's domestic packages is done since there will be no DHL domestic cargo.

Exactly. Instead of hauling all of DHLs domestic stuff we will split DHLs business with FedEx. This announcement is great for FDX and good for UPS. Had the UPS/DHL deal gone through it would have almost guaranteed hiring, but now the furlough talk will continue.

I would say DHL's domestic express market is up for grabs. At least that's the way I'm reading it. Wonder who they're planning on having transport their intl stuff to and from the US? Didn't they just sign something with Polar?

FDX is actively bidding for and has been for the past few months for DHL's customers.......

job cuts

Speaking on behalf of Naven, the way I read that is when the DHL/UPS deal was announced in May, DHL stated that there would be 8000 job cuts. When the Ohio lawmakers got involved to try and save jobs (in Ohio, screw everybody else), DHL began stating that the UPS deal needed to go through or DHL would pull out of all intra North American deliveries, slashing 18,000 jobs. (that's the number DHL was throwing around then)

Looks like the latter came true and DHL will not be delivering boxes within North America. Total job cuts 13,000 - 14,000. Honestly, not to bash the Ohio lawmakers too much, had the original UPS/DHL deal gone through, nothing says that the cost cutting efforts would not have proven enough, and DHL would have pulled out of N. America at some later date. I think the Ohio lawmakers simply accelerated the inevitable.

Rott, I agree. The writing has been on the wall for awhile now. These RIF's would have occured with or without lobbying efforts. This just speeded things up. Being in the line of fire, I'd rather have a mercy killing, than linger.

DHL will continue to ship internationally into and out of the USA for "half of it's top 200 customers" (quote DHL website from Roberto's link). After the restructuring, DHL will have 103 shipping ports, down from 423. (qoute DHL website again.) So how will these packages get from Smallsville, America to one of these ports? That is the UPS/DHL deal, downsized from the original deal announced in May where UPS would lift all DHL intra North American freight.

UPS (and FDX) have been picking up customers by the thousands as those customers bailed out of contracts and shipping agreements with DHL to move North American freight.

Back to Furloughs.... I think all junior UPS (and FDX) guys/gals can get a good night sleep. But before you go to sleep, say a prayer for the ABX/Astar folks. Our security comes at the price of their loss.

Well that's nice of you to say. I thought the Piranha would be feeding by now.

Once again, to all those impacted, I am truly sorry this is happening. Whether you realize it or not, I think a lot of people are thinking about the losses you and your co-workers are facing. This industry has become one long roller coaster ride and no one should believe they are immune from the same fate. Just ask some of the folks from TWA, US Airways and a slew of other pilots who, up until recently, thought they had job security.

First of all.....not much stuff to split up. I dont know about your 8 heavy but my DC-9 flew around mostly empty. I hope Ups and Fedex and the rest of the American frieght carriers get all of DHL's business as well as the Intl stuff too. That way the only yellow and red I have to see is from the bug guts on my window driving to my next job interview. (Did I say that out loud??? I feel much better)
