There is no deal as of 12-13-08. It is official that ABX will park all of their DC-9's and Astar will park all their 727's on 01/31/09. ABX will continue 767 service for DHL through at least 06/30/09. I'm not sure about Astar's role in the remaining DHL saga. One thing is for sure, many families will be devastated including mine. So much for living the American dream. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Red Baron - I, and every Big Brown pilot I've ever talked to or have flown with, sincerely hope that the new year will bring better things for all of you. Things look pretty bad out there right now but I hope that this incredible turmoil will abate sooner rather than later and that things will begin to improve very soon...

God Bless all the families effected by this. It could happen to any of us.

The title of this thread is very misleading.

Also, in case you missed the memo, there ain't gonna be no 'deal' anymore. DHL announced a complete withdrawal from the American domestic market.

Agreed, the thread title is misleading. However, there still could be an agreement with dhl and brown for brown to fly the international freight.

International freight? Huh? No way, internationally DHL is still a giant and they will take care of that portion on their own... (If anything, they might be carrying OUR stuff in the future - oh boy, here comes yet another conspiracy theory... )

DHL never asked UPS to fly their international freight, instead the original proposal was for UPS to fly all domestic shipments which they’d then deliver themselves in their own yellow trucks (or ‘package cars’ in brown lingo ).

Since they decided to abandon the US market, what's left are overseas shipments sent via DHL to the US (and vice versa). DHL will take care of the international portion of the shipments themselves but once their volume arrives in the US it'd have to be shipped via air (or ground) within the US and it is those domestic shipments that DHL is negotiating with UPS (and supposedly with Fedex too).

Not to get off the subject; but, where do you guys think Polar fits into all this drama? Do you think it's just a matter of time before Polar falls to the same fate as ABX and Astar?

The sort in Wilmington is closing as of January 4, 2009. No one has heard if they are going to move the sort back to CVG, or to an as yet undisclosed location (read SDF). ABX is supposed to fly some 767's for DHL through June, future unknown.

Sad to say, but flying for a living is dead to me.

The talks are for UPS to deliver DHL's international freight in the USA. The previous quote is correct, he just didn't spell it out for you. You knew what he meant.

I'm just trying to figure out why there has been so few furloughs at Astar/ABX? For a company in dire straits and losing there only customer as Astar is, why only about 5% announced so far.

One would think they would have announced 500 or so pilot layoffs. There must be 1000+ between the two airlines.

Maybe they will get the smaller contract.
