You're going through or have gone through a nasty divorce and somehow your spouse, ex-spouse or soon to be ex-spouse has access to your calendar (they are a crewmember, work in flight ops, know some one that does, etc.) and you don't want them to know where you are, how much you work or don't work, if you've upgraded, etc. as this knowledge could lead to a change in alimony or possible harassment. Outside of these few scenarios (and I know of a couple folks in this boat), there is no valid reason in my opinion.

And then there are some that simply use an abundance of caution to protect their privacy. They never have told anyone, except maybe their own spouse in very private, secluded location, their own Social Security Number. They always spend cash for fear of being tracked by bank records, and they keep a latex cover on their computer when they connect to the internet. While some would characterize them as paranoid, they are certain they're just being very careful.

Why do I get the distinct impression that there are a lot of folks hanging around here whose time would be better spent going to the Library, checking out Flying the Line and READING it !?

SOME of you guys have NO idea why a pilot's union was formed -under what conditions. . the sacrifices made by countless numbers -AND what the union has done for the profession.

"Heigh Ho Silver" . .. we got a bunch of Lone Rangers and independent contractors in the ranks, it seems.

Hehe, you just described one opf my crashpad roomies. He has had his calendar blocked since he came to FedEx via Tigers. Long time 727 guy, new on the MD-11. He is blown away how the MD grapevine is much more active than the 727. After a discussion of who he isn't spying on him and why, and my explanation of why some look down on calendar blockers, he is re-evaluating and may open his calendar! He talked about the other stuff - unlisted number, id theft, etc. Told him it didn't hold water for calendar blocking!

While these almost seem like reasons, if the person in question has access to VIPS then they know what your bid award was and then they can see if you're flying those trips. They can get your locker number, your phone number, etc. None of those things are affected by blocking your calendar. The only thing I see you doing by blocking your calendar is to keep other pilots for seeing what you are doing. Since if you really want to see their calender you just use other avenues. IMHO blocking is just hiding for fear of being called out for breaking ranks.
