Default moving up

If one starts of as a f/o in the 727 at FedEx, how long would it take to upgrade to a f/o in the wide?? I guess I’m trying to figure out how long it usually takes a person to move up in equipment to get to the biggest or largest equipment. Is there a way that this is usually done?? (Obviously seniority counts).
Thanks for any input.

In the past you had to spend one or two year s as a 727so and then one or two as a fo in the jurassic jet, but now hiring, if you have experience into the right seat of the MD-11. I think it is nuts, but we are doing it.

I heard the latest batch of new hires all had some experience which suggested they would be quick studies into the MD-11 and all are heading to MD-11 right seat in ANC. I also heard one candidate turned down the job offer because he didn't want to work out of ANC. All unconfirmed.

Other than that special situation, moving to equipment depends upon your timing with a standing (equipment) bid, which we usually have once a year. ANC is junior so you could hold MD-11 right seat in ANC at the first opportunity of the next equipment bid after being hired.

Thanks for the replies. So if you don’t have experience in the right seat of the MD-11 and you start of as a s/o in the 727, how long would it take to, or would one have to upgrade to a f/o in the 727 and then upgrade to a f/o in the MD? Special situations not withstanding, just the “normal procedures.”

The experience that these new hires had were not in the MD11, just heavy time in international ops.

It will take you approx 1-2 yrs to get to a wide body right seat at the latest, with the current growth that fedex is experiencing. We currently have 727 capts with no more than four years on the property. It all depends on the timing of the next bid after being activated to the line. If a large bid comes in just after being activated in the back of the 27, you could possibly be going right back into training for a widebody in the right seat.

Once you're on the property, you can bid any seat in any aircraft during an equipment bid. There is no requirement to move progressively from NB to WB, SO to FO to CPT. Most folks do by their own choice, but it's strickly based upon what you ask for and what your seniority will allow you to hold. For myself, I started as an SO in the 727 then bid ANC MD11 FO and got it 15 months later. Some new hires were lucky enough in recent bids to get the MD11 at ANC one or two months out of 727 SO school--I know several who were still on probation when they arrived at ANC, they were so new to the company! Again, what seat and aircraft you get once you're on the property is based soley upon your timing with an equipment bid, what you ask for, and what your seniority will hold, nothing else.

Not true. I happen to know 2 of the latest newhires........though I didn't sponsor them. Niether of them has Heavy time. Both are former Military with Tactical jet background. One also flew the C-12 (BE-1900) AND T-39.
It's not that they are bad guys (quite the contrary)...it is just they didn't have any heavy time or significant 121 experience.........

So it still appears to be "who you Know"........that will never change.

I don't really care where the Purple Nuggets come from or their backgrounds. I honestly don't think this is a big deal. Other companies hire straight into the right seat of wide body, glass cockpits all of the time. The company is smart to take it seriously and, because they don't have the experience training for that environment, over react to a certain degree. But in the long run, I think the Nuggets and FedEx will survive the whole exercise. Besides, they'll be too junior to fly anything but MD-10 trips.

I agree, I don't care who or where the new guys come from.....as long as they are quality pilots with good senses of humor (they'll need it).....

...it is just that it contradicts what our SCP said in his correspondence to the Pilots. No big deal.
