LIDO feedback
#1
Guys,
My new gig is looking at shipset charts for the fleet. I made a suggestion that LIDO would be worth a look vs. Jepp. I was thoroughly skewered by folks who had used LIDO , and told that it was terrible and infinitely inferior to Jepp.
I remember the growing pains we/you had initially, especially in regard to hidden ballnotes, but I would appreciate any feedback you can give since you have lived with the change for a few years now.
Easy on the flamethrowers , boys......my nomex is still smokin' from my newfound brothers.
Regards,
BG

Comparing the paper product only, Jepp wins hands down over LIDO. I couldn't imagine relying on LIDO, without having the EFB, preferably, and FMS to compliment and clarify the information.
In my opinion, the LIDO appears to not be intended to be used as a sole source of information the way the Jepps are.
However, I would use any chart system combined with the EFB over having to lug the Jepps around.

Stick with Jepps. I have gotten used to LIDO but I would much prefer Jepps. My biggest problem with LIDO is scavenger hunt that you have to go on to find the one hidden note that will get you in trouble. We're all about safety, until it costs money.

In small aircraft the large binders are really inconvenient and cumbersome. The product itself is (IMO) inferior to the Jepp product. Enroute charts are poorly organized.
Plus you have to rely on the previous user to 1) put charts back, 2) put charts back correctly, and 3) not lose anything. Too often you will find pages missing or in the wrong position. Also the quality of the LIDO program is directly related to how well (or how poorly) the books/kits are put together and delivered to the aircraft. Lots of variations found in our kits. When I fly weeklong pairings through the same cities I print my own and leave the onboard LIDO kit untouched.

Biggest problem with LIDO is the size of the binders. It is intended to be used with the EFB, not on paper. They are unwieldy in the cockpit. There's no perfect system out there, but once you get used to where to look for everything, it's pretty good. I would use any system that doesn't require hauling around a 40lb bag of pubs or doing updates.

I miss not having Jepps. LIDO is "spotty" sometime on the information that is listed. The paper size is way too large also. It is nice not to have to carry 20-30 lbs of books though.
Best of both worlds would be Jepps and an EFB.
