I hope it's not true
I was around the school house and there were suits talking about displacement/furlough bid in next few weeks. Philadelphia going to 9 flights aday after peak and they're are getting rid of 4500 people in phl and 1/6 of ups managers by early next yr. I think we're gonna corner ourselves to tight by trying to get too lean operationally but what do i know. I just hope the first part doesn't happen.

I think it's supposed to be either a displacement bid or a furlough bid depending on how things go with the MOU. Let's predict the MOU is successful. There are still people who need to be displaced off their sofas - uh, I mean off the DC-8.

I'll give you another rumor.
There will be a bid in late January. It will not displace all of the remaining DC8 pilots. It will displace some, but the company wants to wait until the new rest rules come out to see how it will affect staffing on each fleet. The openings will be mainly in the lower 48.
Not sure I believe it, but it's what I've heard.

I stand by my FedEx theory: if they don't furlough, neither will we. However, I think it's entirely possible UPS will walk us right up the the ledge, hold us by the belt and let us look over, then pull back at the last minute. This is especially likely if they don't meet the "savings" targets they advertise. Bid packs with unusually high (like double) reserve lines will be your first hint of furlough notices -- even if the furlough ultimately gets cancelled in 89 days. I used to think they'd put us on the street and pay the 3 months, but now I think they'll send the notices and see just how firm a committment the OT/JA ban really works out. If pilots fail to honor the ban, it'll be a relatively cheap price to pay for that intel. It's a lot of mind games from now until the economy is obviously booming (or until FX furloughs, in which case our notices will be genuine). Be sure upper management is aware of the fractious nature of the IPA as of late (over-60, contested election, OT/JA, etc). They want to test what kind of leverage this gives them when it really counts. If nothing else, it gives them a baseline for contract negotiations in two years. Kinda like we used to fly planes right at Soviet airspace and turn away at the last minute to judge their response...

Opinion only: Hard to believe Atlanta will be patient enough for the nprm process given the background of our CEO.

Don't hold your breath. By march FedEx will have enough of the reshuffle completed to furlough. It will be interesting to see how the Flag Ops, Crew Rest rules etc. effect things, but if the arbitrator (4A2B) goes in favor of ALPA FedEx will probably furlough around then.
