Fedex Flight Routing Question
Hey guys, I've got a little bit of an "off" question but I was in Appleton, WI today and just happened to see a big beautiful Fedex Airbus sitting on the ramp that piqued my interest.
Looking at its filed route on FlightAware, excluding tonight where there was a diversion, why does this flight (#1329) zig-zag so drastically to MEM?
Any of you guys know what's up?

This is one of our "sweep" flights.
Basically these flights are scattered all over the country and leave their outstations mostly empty and take a zig zag route to MEM. These flights are basically flying spares meant to sweep into a city with a broken airplane or extra freight and take it on to MEM.
There are other ones around the country, one in particular is a flight that leaves DEN (FDX1311) and heads WEST before turning around and heading to MEM.

Other people's descriptions that are better than mine...
(The cities change sometimes monthly, so the DLH flight may now be the ATW flight, etc.)

"On a typical night, one of the five makes an unexpected stop to collect an overflow of packages, one lands to bail out a plane needing a repair, and three arrive in Memphis as empty as they were when they took off."

'For now, no micro-recession appears to be on the horizon.'
Thank goodness the Times was so prescient back in 2005.
I am sure our sweep-flight structure has been pared down just a bit from those heady days.
Cheers,
Beertini
