Because you must be "telephone available" 1:30 prior to your reserve period, i.e., available at 12 midnight for RA, I believe you must be released before 1600 to comply with the FARs. This is a product of the Whitlow Letter from a while back. If you are responsible to the company for something, you are on duty. Feel free to weigh in on this... I trust all of you will.

Also, I was called off base hotel standby once towards the end of my window and given a flight assignment. Your duty time for the contract begins at report time at the airport; your 16 hour FAR limit is from the beginning of your base hotel standby window. Your flight assignment must be scheduled to complete (plus 30 minutes) at the earliest expiration of those two timeframes.

It doesn't happen very often, but it is another one of those loopholes in our contract that benefit the company.

A fatigue call is another option if you feel it is necessary.

The RA begins at the start of the day (0130) and the RB begins at +12 from the start of the day
and they are by definition 12 hours. the other paragraph refers to the END of the R period so i think it means 0530 (0130 + 4) or 1730 (1330 + 4) to be shceduled for crew rest.

2. Reserve Periods (RP)
a. Reserve periods may take any of the following forms:
i. Reserve Period A (RP-A) is a 12 hour period of time
beginning at the start of the day.
iii. Reserve Period B (RP-B) is a 12 hour period of time
beginning 12 hours after the start of the day.

So you're saying those on R24 are violating the FARs for time on duty...?

R24 and our old way of being on reserve are two different things.

Since the CBA says CRS is required to give you 24 hrs notice of a trip assignment, you (should) have plenty of time to crew rest!

So that means we are on duty for 17:30 hours if you include the 1:30 of telephone availability prior to the beginning of the RP?

How is that legal?

Kind of like when you get your international alert call, your duty doesn't start until show time. Even though they can call you 1.5 prior to the starft of your reserve period, your actual show availability time ( 0130L or 1330L) is when your duty starts.

Just to stop some of the false rumors floating around on this thread, HSTBY is not considered duty until the showtime of an assignment. CBA 12.B.3.d.iv.

If you are assigned an International duty period you are legal for the scheduled duty limit determined by the crew complement.

"If assigned a flight, the pilot's duty period shall begin at the showtime for such flight. If assigned a domestic duty period that does not consist exclusively of a deadhead, the standby pilot shall be scheduled for release to a legal rest period not later than the scheduled on-duty limit for that showtime, but in any case, the standby pilot shall be released to a legal rest period not later than 4:30 hours after the end of his standby period"
