That's not quite true. The decision to move away from the contractor model was made after the FAA conducted an inspection of Orion's maintenance records and grounded their entire 727-100 program. There was very little warning before this occurred, and caught UPS totally off guard. The other carriers had no way to take up the slack, and there were massive numbers of service failures (relatively speaking, for back then). UPS never forgot this. There were other reasons to operate under their our own certificate, but the Orion shut-down started the ball rolling. The FAA always disliked the fact that competition between the carriers put a lot of pressure on each individual carrier to operate on the ragged edge of the FARs - but they did not, and could not tell UPS that they had to start operating under their own certificate.

Could UPS go back to a contractor model? I doubt it - that ship's probably already sailed. But, I definitely see the point FreightPuppy is making.

Although they run over our contract daily, the cost of attempting this and losing the arbitration would be billions and they are not willing to gamble with this, no one is willing to put their career on the line for a multi billion dollar mistake.

Trust me, I hope you are right and this never happens but I'm sort of paranoid sometimes when it comes to having a full airline career.

Agreed. However at a company that made $11.7 Billion in revenue and $553 Million in profit (in just 3 months-1st Qtr.) )it's possible but arguable at best that the company is furloughing because of financial straits.

YMMV,
FF

Sounds like a great idea. You do realize that the time the APU starts and stops is recorded and reported, the speed flown is recorded and reported, the time each engine runs during taxi out and in is recorded and reported. There are no secrets on modern airplanes, and any of this information can and will be used against you, including your termination hearing. Good Luck! BTW, unemployment gets expensive also.

If anyone doubts the detailed information that they keep on you, you only need to go to airupsers.com and see your leg by leg fuel statistics. They aren't keeping that stuff just for a hobby. I recognoze the sentiment behind the statement, but people have to be smart.
