If you think you may lose your job, I would try to get hired at the majors or Atlas/Kalitta/Evergreen/Southern/Omni. Evergreen/Southern may not be much better than USAJet, but at least you will be getting heavy/intntl experience...or go for a decent corporate job (or UAV, if you are into that).

USAJet is better than Mesa, Gulfstream (FL), Great Lakes, and maybe Trans States. The "better" regionals are better than USAJet.

On the other hand, the new Flight/Duty/Rest rules going into effect before 1 Aug, will make USAJet a much easier place to fly. No more 24/7 indefinite reserve. No more 20+ hour duty days (for a two-man crew). No more 0200 callouts, with no rest, for a 16+ hour duty day, etc., etc. BUT, these new rules may threaten the Falcon 20 operation. The companies they fly for will have to be willing to pay a lot more for the same services. Just like everything else on Earth, no one knows what will happen.

From reading your post, I think you are anticipating a "Grass is Greener" type of situation, which it is not.

Also, you do NOT have to live in DTW. You will just need a crashpad near YIP.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the insight. This is what I am looking for.

I have been trying to get on at Atlas, even pilot resume walk-ins don't help that much there anymore. World is another place I would like to get on. I am looking at USA Jet as a place that I can spend some doing something different, rounding out the resume, and honestly maybe enjoying parts of. I do not enjoy flying the northeast corridor everyday for 6 legs and be told I am too expensive by management.

I completely understand the grass isn't greener over there... but it is different. I didn't become a pilot so I could work at one regional and one major for the rest of my life, that's just not me.

Thanks for the replies!

brother, you will be truly blessed if you can work for one major your entire life.

Runner,

Having been there, done that type of job and then gone to a regional, I say ride your pony till it dies. Dont leave just to "round out" the resume. That type of flying is a world apart from what you are used to. I loved the flying, just couldnt hack the horrendous schedule my former employer had. Life at a regional is easy compared to a USA Jet, Ameristar, Grand Air, Cherry ect..ect.. lifestyle. Wait it out till the flood gates open later this year and save yourself the headache from Willow Run hangover.

What's the story with USA jet guys doing passenger screening?

Is it the FO's job / crew effort?

Strange that a professional pilot would fly a DC-9 AND do the TSAs job, while making less than a TSA bum over at DTW... but it's the nature of the bid-ness I suppose.

atpcliff 04-12-2011 12:32 PM

USA Jet doesn't do any bidness.

They are a business that is trying to make money.

On their charter/PAX flights, they normally do their own screening. It is a crew effort, as 1 person would take a very long time to screen all the pax and their luggage on a full flight. Since it is charter, they often fly to places with no terminals, hence no TSA, or they go to places where the airport terminal is shutdown when they get there, hence no TSA.

Some "Professional Pilots" load and unload their planes. Others do TSA screening. Others plan their own flights and file their own flight plans. Others always/sometimes book their own hotels and/or airline flights. Others write manuals and set up training programs.

If you want to go to an airline where ALL you do is fly, then you are quite limited. Most places I know of require you to do a lot of paperwork, in addition to flying. The more you do, besides just fly, the more valuable you are to your employer.

Are F/O's on the DC-9 breaking guarantee?

runinonfumes 03-05-2012 07:11 PM

NO! FOs are mostly not breaking guarantee.

CrakPipeOvrheat 03-05-2012 07:15 PM

NO! FOs are mostly not breaking guarantee.
Are they sitting at home or on the road? How much flying do they do?

atpcliff 03-05-2012 07:23 PM

I don't work at USAJet now. When I was there, I broke guarantee twice in 6.5 years. I was a commuter, and wanted my days off at home. If you live in DTW you can be home more and sell your days off to make a lot more money, when they are busy.
