Any chance the FE written rqmt will go away?

Not until the 727's go away. The FE Written is not a problem to knock out. Get the study book, take the test. Or even easier, do the one-day course at All-Atps or one of those deals. A high score counts for brownie points in the interview process (certainly doesn't hurt at a mimimum). The score is valid for two years.

A fellow poolie friend recommended a great website for the FEX written:

Sheppard Air Flight Test 4.0 Prep Software ATP, Flight Engineer, Mil Comp - FAA Airline Transport Pilot

Way, way worth the $75. They will give you a sweet gouge that'll reduce your study time down by many hours. I am 100% satisfied with my score thanks to that software:)

I took my first FEX written years ago through All ATP's, same outcome, however I had to spend the whole day there instead of studying from my own laptop when I chose to do it.

However, if I remember correctly, the FedEx pilot recruitment website states that the FEX written is required "prior to being hired", not necessarily a requirement for the interview... Can't hurt though. I know I had it ready for the interview.

Good luck.

Yes, it's definitely worth it, good for 2 years. And also, when you do get an interview remember your medical has to be within the past six months. Mine said first class, but since it was more than six months it reverted to second. Oops, but not a big deal. Just make sure everything's covered.

Good luck to everyone, hope we announce hiring soon! :)

Uhh....Don't show up to interview without it. Not having it is telling the interviewers you aren't serious and are hoping for a REAL airline job before you get called by FedEx.

Not having it is the wrong way to "stand out" in the interview. At least that's how it used to be.

what if your first class medical is good for one yr? not all of us are over 40. Also I know that the FE written is good for longer than two yrs if employed by a 121 carrier. Does furlough count as employeed in those regards. Does anyone think that they will have interviews shortly after peak?

Heeding the advice from posts on some of the aviation forums, if offered an interview, I am not going to go in with a FE written exam more than 2 years old unless they specifically say it is ok.

Hoover: You are correct about he first class medical now. That was a fairly recent change if you remember, most widebody captains at FedEx have been here a while. If YOUR first class medical is valid, you are good to go.

It has been hashed over on here many times but I will repeat. The FAA may recognize your FEX written past 2 years if you are continuously employed by a 121 carrier, but FedEx DOES NOT.

FedEx is hiring you, so you would want to meet their requirements, not quibble over a FAA allowance.

VALIDITY OF AIRMAN KNOWLEDGE TEST REPORTS
Airman Knowledge Test Reports are valid for the 24-calendar-month period preceding
the month you complete the practical test.
If the Airman Knowledge Test Report
expires before completion of the practical test, you must retake the knowledge test.

1. Air Carrier Employees.
The following criteria apply to flight crewmembers and
mechanics employed by a 14 CFR part 121 or 14 CFR part 135 air carrier.

Employment by a 14 CFR part 135 on-demand operators does not qualify an
applicant for an extension:
a. Applicants who are flight crewmembers must have completed initial new-hire training, initial equipment training, or transition training.
b. Applicants who are flight crewmembers must be participating in a training program which includes a recurrent training curriculum in accordance with 14 CFR part 121 or 14 CFR part 135.
c. Applicants who are mechanics must meet the currency requirements of 14 CFR part 65.
d. Applicants must be currently employed by a 14 CFR part 121 or a 14 CFR
part 135 air carrier. However, applicants do not need to have been continuously employed by a qualified air carrier between the time they passed the knowledge test and the time they apply to take the oral and flight tests.

Yeah, that makes sense. One would stand out by not having the FEX written.

I guess what I meant to say, and didn't do so clearly, is that one can wait for the CALL for the interview, then get the written done. Not the best logic, but for some, the call might not come within the next two years... by which time the written would be expired.

Anyway, get it done if your chances of interviewing are decent... Good luck!
