There are many in our pilot group, myself not included, that will have 25 years in their 50s. Instead of trying to keep the status quo during a negotiation, maybe we should try to get more. Now that is negotiation!

And on that note, why maintain 7% for B-Fund Contribution? As a pilot group, we should look at other carriers loss of pensions in the last 10 years, and start relying more on our B-Fund than the A-Fund anyway. Take a bit off our A-Fund, and make that B Fund contribution 8, 9, 10%. Maybe we can increase that B Fund and lose a little A Fund in every future contract until our A-Fund gets to federally protected pension limits. 20 years from now, maybe our retirement could be mostly B-Fund. Now that would be a novel idea? Would the real senior guys be willing to support that? Probably not, but it would make for some good negotiation instead of trying to keep the status quo.
Your suggestions regarding diminishing the A fund are very ill advised. Our A fund is currently funded iaw the ERISA laws. The company would have to be doing very poorly, for it to become underfunded, or ALPA would have to give it away.

Please google immediate annuity, click on the first link, enter the amount of annual retirement income you'd like to have & hit enter. The result is most likely in teh seven figures, unless you are in your 20's.

The point is- unless you amass that figure of wealth, AND manage the portfolio that it is in, you will never reach the returns of our defined benefit plan.

Very good point, but lets not pretend we can't end up like the guys at Delta and United with much smaller retirements than anticipated. No company is immune to changes in the economy and Fedex could find itself in financial trouble in the future. Maybe not this contract but in the future I would like to have the option to freeze my A fund at my current years of service (i.e. 10 years = 20% of high five at 60) and take a larger B fund contribution or 401K matching so my retirement wouldn't be tied to the company. Then the age 60 would not be critical and I could retire whenever I got enough nuts in my sack. Over a 25 year career with an average salary of 200K and additional 7% B fund would be nearly equal to 10 years of A fund benefits(8% return). How many of us are living 10 years after retirement. Pensions are under attack all over this country. Lets not pretend it can't happen to us.

I have a question to the FDX group here.

What is the value of time off to you?

It depends, is it time off while sitting around on my second non vol STV or my third? To paraphrase Monthy Python; Is it Asian or European time off?

I also have questions to the FDX group here.

What is the value of a good night's sleep to you?
What is the value of waking up in your own bed?
What is the value of waking up in someone else's bed?

What is the value of asking something like this?

Because time off with the family is important to many of us. At what point does that time off become more important than work? What is the cost to each of us of working as opposed to being at home with the family? It is very subjective, I know. Some would do anything to avoid being home, so that is why I thought I'd ask the question. It does matter.
