Indy and FedEx
I was wondering if you FedEx guys could help me with a few questions about living in Indy and working for FedEx.
I know that Indy is not a pilot base and probably won't be one, but.........What would quality of life be like, living in Indy and trying to commute?
Is there a lot of flying originating from Indy, hotel standby, etc??? Does it go senior?
Is there any particular airplane type which would make it better?
Would it be an easy commute to/from MEM? Jumpseat availability?
Any other advice, comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

We do a lot of flying out on Indy. Most trips go senior, especially the airport and hotel standbys-which are done by the guys living there. Most of the other trips are double deadheads to an "outer city" with week long turns in and out of Indy. As for commuting out of Indy, it should be easy to Memphis with multiple flights each day and ok to Anchorage or Europe.

As boxflyer says, hotel and airport standby in IND go senior.
Speaking for the 727, trips that have layovers in IND are sprinkled throughout the bidpack; in other words, there are no very 'pure' lines.
Commuting to from MEM or anywhere else, for that matter is a breeze.

With one caveat - if FDX does not service an airport close to your home, it gets more difficult. Certainly doable, just a little more difficult. During my indoc, when we had to identify our staging base, when I said Fort Walton Beach, FL, the guy told me I should move. I guess he commuted out of Pensacola for a couple of years before finally moving to Planet Memphis. I've been able to off-line jumpseat on NWA fairly regularly, with only one cancelled flight and one denied jumpseat. The biggest drawback is that without getting on the AM push out of Memphis on a FDX aircraft, you have to add a day on both the front and back end of your trips. Turns a 15 day month into an 18 or 19 day month.
