Default HF on R220

Flying down R220, Anchorage Center sometimes provides HF frequencies (back-up for CPDLC) and sometimes they don't. When they don't, do you ask for them or do you just keep on keepin' on and wait for a CPDLC handoff to Tokyo?

You can ask guys on VHF 123.45.

Or you can look under "COM data" on Lido.

Or send a text query to ANC.

Depends who you're flying with. Most of the old school ANC guys will dial up SFO and get a SELCAL check after going non-radar from PAZN (NATES). That way if you're between NATES and NIPPI and you lose CPDLC you are still in contact with somebody. Oh, by the way, real heavy INTL guys never ask for HF freqs! That's what charts and knowing where the sun is is for.

Another techniques I've seen is calling RJJJ on HF as soon as going non-radar from PAZN. They can hear you fine from NATES on their primary freq, and all you have to do is fire off a pos report at NIPPI and you're done. The issue here is that while you have an HF backup for CPDLC, it is not your current controlling agency until you get to NIPPI. Splitting hairs, really.

Just don't say 'Heavy' on the radio in Asia an you'll be fine.

Hi Mac, a very easy way to get the HFs' is to call SFO AIRINC while in the blocks in ANC on 129.4 and ask them what they'll be using for the next few hours. This also works really well when going to Asia through Russian airspace, for company position reports when out of ACARS coverage AND when going from ANC down to OAK or SFO.
Asking Center for the HF frequencies is almost as embarrassing as squaking 2000 at NATES, IMHO.
Cheers, and welcome to the North Pac!

Why are you guys sucking up to the lazy ANC controllers that don't want to give a Freq when they hand you off............pure BS......funny everybody else hands you off with the proper frequency.....Just pure laziness!!!!!

They usually don't even hand us off any more when we are CPDLC. After NATES we just fly out of their vhf range and approaching NIPPI we get the little "bing" telling us to call Tokyo.
