Thanks Freight Dog, Albeif15, georgetg, and flybyknite. It looks like if we go we will lean towards putting them in local schools. I'm freaking out because I must be a little over protective of my girls. They are in Kindergarten and 2nd grade. I'm sure that's young enough to pick up the language quickly. That's a good idea having a tutor to help as well.

Default E-3s

Well if an E-3 can afford a DOD school then I am sure a rich FDX pilot could.

Schools is only one part of it. How does one handle a Euro costing $1.44 (now, headed in the upward direction) with a 19% Value Added Tax to everything one buys? Other than bring a LOT of (disposable) cash when you come to Germany.....Guys & Gals in Europe now... is this even doable as an F/O?

My little nephew lived in Germany when he was 2 years old. It wasn't long before he started speaking in German. His favorite thing to do was riding the "strassenbaum." He insisted there was no such word as "bahn." Drove his mother crazy.

You missed the point that DOD schools are free for active duty.

Perfect ages!! They will pick it up in no time. And you may be the one needing the tutor so you can help them with their homework-- yep, homework beginning in the first grade.

Once again humour was lost on the internet. The E-3 is an aircraft I think they were discussing.

I'm wondering the "is it doable as an FO" question as well. I'm guessing if you're single with no kids, it would be doable. With a spouse to fully support and children to school, my guess is: it's not.

Just thinking out loud, but if the private schools are so expensive that none of our pilots use the $5K educational stipend per kid and they all go the public school route, then what exactly did we gain from negotiating that "upgrade" into the latest FDA package?

Would a COLA have been more useful for all???

There is a COLA, $3500 per month is the Min housing allowance per month, it adjusts upward quarterly when the Dept of state foreign Max Per diem Rate (MPDR) goes up 10% (resets to the new MPDR). You did read the LOA right?

It just cracks me up that people think it isn't doable when an FO in the EMEA will be making more than 95% of the population there, and paying less tax's to boot.
