I have always gone directly to the gate, even on international jumpseats, and it has worked out well so far. If you end up having a bunch of extra time though, and the ticket counter has no line, stop by and check in with them.

I have done it a few times on NWA/DAL (and on DAL from Halifax recently). They treat it as a domestic flight. No taxes. I'm always in uniform, so customs/immigration/security very easy. U can go straight to the gate. In Halifax I went to the ticket counter first.
I have had no problems.
