Nepotism at UPS
#21
If you are UNDER 35 and get hired at Brown, you MAY get to enjoy some of the good schedules and life style that Freighter Captain mentions in his post.
Over 45 and get hired, you will be below the bottom half in seniority for most of your career and you will never know anything about those great schedules he alludes too.
What about between 35-45 ... I wish I knew ! But its not looking good.
What some of the flames fail to mention, don't give up any seniority at another airline to come to the bottom at UPS ...
This is my 4th airline. I have never made it very far up any seniority list. But the last 4+ years at the bottom of UPS have been the hardest of my career on my health, family and marriage ... And I feel lucky. Because for 100+ pilots the career move to UPS has been financially devastating.

Considering the bids consist of primary, secondary, and tertiary bids, wouldn't that leave 3 opportunities for conflict bidding per year, even for the most senior bidders? Hardly knocking out 3-5 weeks every 2 months for a junior person.
Myself? Well, I'm on my fifth year, and next bid period - in which I have one week of vacation - all I can hold is week on week off reserve in ANC. As for my week of vacation, I couldn't even get it to fall on one of those weeks of reserve. It only conflicted with one day of reserve. Whoopie!!! Hardly knocking out 3-5 weeks every 2-3 months.
I'm sure you mean well with your post, but it only underscores the difference between senior and junior.

As to all the other comments. Look at every job like it may be your last , see if you fit and can deal with the way that you will live and what you will make, don't plan on a huge change in the way things are at any carrier. Living in domicile solves many of the problems with any schedule. If you don't want to live where the airline bases people a different choice might be best for you.
Good luck.

I assume you do not know the definition of nepotism...
Used to be that if you had a relative working anywhere in any capacity for UPS, you could not get a job there. was turned down for an internship back in 2000 because my uncle loaded planes.
they've since dropped that rule for all position except pilot slots. seems they couldn't hire any more people at the main hub because EVERYONE in the city of Louisville had a relative (or 2) working sort or manhandling cans.

That's ok, I am happy where I am now....as long as we stay in business!

Year 2 F/O pay in January is $149 per hour. $149 times min guarantee 975 hours (13 pay periods X 75 hours) is.......
$145,275.
If you doubt this, check out the UPS/IPA CBA.

OOOOOOOWWWWWWWOOOOOOO | OOOOOOO (next bid period's first week)
[where O = a day off, and W = a work day]
Bid reserve or an international trip. Bid your vacation earlier so that it's the second to the last week of the bid period. Now bid a block of RSV days that has you working that second to last week. Bam, that gives you three weeks off using one week of vacation.
Now, bid the first week off of the subsequent bid period. Not hard to do unless you're in the bottom 10% or so in your domicile.
That's an easy way to turn one week of vacation into four weeks off.

5 years ago, UPS was considered one of the top 3 places to be a pilot.
I think that is no longer the case. Of course the pay is attractive, but the career outlook is not as good as it seemed few years ago (of course things always change.)
I'm sure there are plenty of pilots willing to work here, but that doesn't mean much.
