Talked to my ARFF bubba here... they carry a TIC (Thermal Imaging Camera) for this.
Hand held unit carried in the front seat.

Learned something new, didn't know this was avail.
Just hope I (we) never have to request it.

If you listen to the atc tape you will hear cfr ask the crew their intentions. The captain asks for the ir scan and they get right on it. Later they give a brake temperature reading (300 degrees?). The firepeople also brought a camera sized device to the cockpit to check the pedestal for heat. They also entered the e and e compartment.
