Guesses on next FDX bid?

Perhaps because they anticipated a fairly steady stream of new routes that would need 2/2 during the early years of the 777. Eventually that would have to drop off to nil as the schedule and routes stabilize. JMO

That's normal ops. 2 Captains are only required during the first few (don't know exactly) months of operation on a new route.
Every double crew I've flown with on the MD-11 is 1 and 3. That's the way most pax carriers do it too. Not saying 2/2 wouldn't be better for us, but that train left the station a long, long time ago.

For many years NWA ALPA fought to keep their Capt. RFO's ... The logic? More wide-body Capt's is good for EVERYONE!

exactly, and FDX ALPA had it in their hands (literally) to capture 2 Captains for long haul, not that long ago and before the 777 arrived. We continue to be our own worst enemy's.
