French "resistance"
Somebody mentioned the French Resistance movement during WWII, so I feel compelled to chime in. I took a class in college entitled "Collaboration and Resistance in World War II." It focused primarily on those phenomenoms in France. The overriding theme of the seminar was that there was a tremendous amount of the former and virtually none of the latter. In no way is this meant to denigrate the bravery and contributions of those French men and women who were TRUE members of the resistance. They were a great aid to the allies leading up to and during the invasion of Normandy. Their military effect in total, however, was more or less nil. Not surprisingly, by the time we rolled into Paris, everybody and their frere was a dedicated resistant. IMHO, the exception of the French resistance fighters just proves the rule of the prevailing French character. I love France, speak the language, enjoy travelling there, and have never had anything but positive interactions with the natives. But, respect them? Forget it.
