FedEx sleep rooms
I haven't been through MEM in a while. How is the construction of the new sleep rooms going? Any idea when they will be in use?

The grand opening will probably conicide with the next contract being signed. I heard someone on a crew bus comment on how many sleep facilities the Chinese could have built in the last six months. I simply laughed (right before I yawned) at the sadness in that statement.
For those who enjoy/need to take a short nap before the AM outbound, have fun sleeping in the metro terminal under the lights or in the movie theater. Good luck just finding a place to sit! Lots of changes and FCIF course corrections combined with just a little bit of extra fatigue is a recipie for.... |
just curious but how are these outfitted ? pretty well sound proofed etc ? TV ?

A bed, a plastic chair, a shelf, a hook, and the worlds most annoying ringing phones.
If the new beds are like the ones in IND they will break louder than my knees in no time. Regardless of the company studies on sleep the rooms will be a balmy 79 degrees in the summer to comply with company edict 47, so don't complain it is not our fault. |

Yet the Company's own Ground School states sleep is best between 62 and 65 degrees F. To deviate much from this would be hypocritical, wouldn't it? Are you listening managers?

Don't forget the folks in the next room that you can hear through the a/c vent talking on their cell phone ...
|
Potentially Stupid question
Where do I go to find the rules/procedures for the sleep rooms. How are they assigned? When can you use them? Where do you go to get one assigned to you?
I know, I should have asked on IOE but I forgot and I can't find anything on PFC or in the FOM. |
The sleep rooms are basically for airport standbys and hub turners. They are assigned on a first come first serve basis. There will be a receptionist that will assign you a room. You give up some form of id in exchange for a room key. You get your ID back when you check out. Be sure to call crew scheduling to let them know what room you are in if on an airport standby.

Do you have a child of 6 in a twin bed? You now have something in common. Can the great girls down in the sleep room call Flight Coord and say "we are full", and Flight Coord post a big ass sign instead of doing the FedEx version of the walk and bag drag of shame?

Gentlemen (and ladies)-
FILE FATIGUE REPORTS!!!!! The third-world situation in the AOC is ridiculous. People are going out and sleeping in their cars. UNSAT! The complete and utter failure to have a transition plan during construction (and through peak) should have gotten somebody in hot water. This has been a complete failure. I think the end result will be an improvement - if we can get there without an accident. Pipe |

I guarantee fatigue was an issue in DEN. I also guarantee it won't be an issue in NTSB report.

Apparently things aren't all bad? This article says this is a pretty good place to work. I agree ...
FedEx Earns #10 Spot on FORTUNE I say we give the company some slack on the sleep room issue, maybe even give them credit for actually recognizing that there weren't enough sleep rooms and doing something about it. Personally, I feel MUCH BETTER after a short hub-turn nap. |

They were properly trained, demonstrated proficiency repeatedly, more than likely had a properly operating airplane. (even if it wasn't properly loaded - a rested, proficient crew should still handle that) Why wouldn't fatigue make it into a report? We have no tools available to us to predict fatigue. We must use a seat-of-the-pants gouge to guess if we might be fatigued over the next X hours of expected work. |
Perfect!

Hey, that is my chair/bed/sleeper/recliner! ;)

I don't know what you are talking about. I got a great nap in a broken recliner beneath a spot light next to a door that opened and closed every few minutes... not to mention hearing flt coordination making unnecessary announcements every 30 seconds...

Maybe our FedEx Flight Management Team should have imported these instead:

Don't forget the vending machine, with the sodas dropping to the bottom and the coins being put into the machine.
Recliner update: Now most of the recliners in the sleep room are cracked on one side resulting in about a 15 degree list. Kind of like trying to sleep on a sailboat. Plus there is the added bonus of getting a pretty good ab workout when you try to right the chair. I'm pretty sure they are about ready to completely give way. When I get injured by a collapsing recliner do I qualify for disability??? |

The funniest thing is watching the cheap xxx's that use them as a crash pad and still set up shop in the them out in the open. It looks like they are in line to buy concert tickets!

Better there than trying to weasel their way into a sleep room! Last couple of nights, people I know that we're not hub turning were back there trying to get a sleep room
Maybe they think room assignments are seniority based? Some reserve their favorite one too. |

I definitely been there on a long bad weather night knowing its gonna hurt and the rooms all be taken. So I got absolutely no problem drawing attention to someone taking advantage at another's expense! |

Old captain told me years ago - when you leave a sleep room, unlock the door. Some poor probationary pilot might be wandering around, pulling on doors, looking for one to crash in for the night.

Maybe if there was at least a quiet, dark place to sit that wouldn't freaking happen. Just because you didn't operate in does not mean that you shouldn't be rested when you fly the same metal off the same ramp on the outbound. Fatigue doesn't know what seat you sat in on the way to MEM.

Pipe If you jumpseated in you had a chance at a nap on the flight. |
