AirBus Profile issues
#12
I flew the Vanze 1 (south) arrival this morning. Average headwind was about 50 kts and we still needed to use the speed-brakes... excuse me, the spoilers, several times. Maybe next year during CMV-1 we can waste another 30 minutes demonstrating how poorly the Airbus flys these arrivals.

Maybe once we successfully flew an OPD in profile mode. Most of the time, if it's my leg (and typically it is as an FO going into Memphis), I fly V/S, and this works well. I would say fifty percent of the captains don't like this, and would rather put their faith in the computer and "see" what happens. What usually happens is that we come close to missing the first speed restriction, and I come out of profile. And yes, we had inputted the 132 cost index. Still no bueno.
The company will never invest money in an upgrade. It's up to us to fly the airplane and make it happen.
There are only two entities in this world that I trust, one is me, and the other isn't profile.

Great comments ................. This confirms my beliefs in that this is a serious operating issue with the AirBus A300/A310 aircraft in profile mode especially in the descent phase of flight. I agree that ASAP is an avenue to illuminate and get more attention to the problem but I don't agree that it will result in any $$$ spent to get this remedies any time soon. So, if we are to tell ATC that we are unable to fly the required OPD arrival due to our aircraft deficiency in Profile, they would have to revert back to the old way of working us inbound which is what they do part of the time anyway ............ radar vectors and assigned altitudes. Is it going to down the aircraft if we make a maintenance writeup such that indicating that Profile is unable to conform to flying an OPD ??? What say you ?

Fly the A/C.
If it can't do an OPD in Profile then fly it in another mode!
These profiles are designed to help ATC sequence traffic - not so you can just sit back and let the computer do your job!
Why is everything a big conspiracy to you?

Just completing training from MD to Bus after doing the opposite transition 4 years ago.
from Bus to MD instructor comments, "stop bowtie-ing everything and trust prof"
MD to Bus instructor comments "you gotta get out of prof sooner"
I've spent the month learning to never trust prof and really watch Nav
something to think about as you scroll dowwwwn to the RNV approaches
