Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in US
Just recently became aware of this potential health threat originating in Saudi Arabia about two years ago when I read these two articles:
Deadly MERS virus spreading out of control in Saudi Arabia, leaps to Egypt as global pandemic begins
MERS outbreak hits 30% death rate as pandemic spreads in Saudi Arabia
Today it was on Fox News....because the CDC just confirmed the first case in the U.S., specifically Munster, Indiana.
Highlights: The patient just returned from Riyadh and is in stable condition on oxygen, not a ventilator. MERS is caused by a virus similar to the one that led to the SARS epidemic in 2003. There are 262 confirmed cases in 12 countries resulting in 93 deaths for a whopping 30% fatality rate. These numbers conflict with those in the articles because even Fox News does not necessarily have the most current info, but still the fatality rate is accurate. Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Scary part is there is currently no vaccine and no treatment...period. According to public health officials, although the disease is presently transmitted through "close contact" now, that could change as it "evolves through mutation."
The recent increase in cases, dramatically in Saudi Arabia and now spread to 11 other countries, has given rise to concerns about a global pandemic. Stay informed.

Last time I was in DXB I thought I was coming down with MERS, but it turned out to be the WOXOF cigarette smoke at Fibber McGees...imagine my relief.

As enjoyable (and easy) as it is to poke a little fun at Fox News ....
This actually is a rather important story especially in the cargo world. Originated in Saudi and the guy seems to have been working in a hospital there so makes sense and should not freak everyone out. But it is something to be aware of if flying a lot in the Middle East.
