To write someone is the best pilot because they were hired first is subjective. Better contacts? Probably. Better pilots? Is there a way to really tell? From what I've experienced, it's usually a biased feeling.
There isn't a shortage of qualified pilots. And there won't be a problem of filling pilot positions with qualified, proficient aviators. I think a better question may be, is there a shortage of qualified pilots willing to fly the backside of the clock here at FedEx versus a passenger airline?
We need to stay together, unified for a collective all-serving and worthwhile contract. When we see the light, and we will, then and only then will there be the supply of willing participants to fly our schedules under our conditions.

Why would anyone in charge of hiring care? As long as they get a qualified applicant who can move the freight, who cares if the new hires are not astronauts or blue angels? Management is not going to give us a better contract in order to hire pilots with better resumes.
The thing that could attract the cream of the crop guys is an "industry leading" contract, which we won't get unless we get unified and get guys to stop flying DPs and draft. I'm not holding my breath at this point, but hopefully we'll get on the same page soon!

At least two groups tested/passed/no interview in November and December 2012, ~10 folks total I think. Not really in the pool...
