FDX 757 Question
Just wondering if any of the FDX folks can say what the incoming 757's will do to the hiring picture for the future. Replacing a 3 seat plane with a 2 seat plane would lead one to think they'll need fewer folks. But it sounds like the 727s will be around for some time still...? Just wondering.

With retirements and additional aircraft, hiring should remain steady @ 200-300 a year easily. Don't worry, Fred won't stop hiring until he takes over the world

Not a factor -- retirements are a major factor along with growth -- 757's, 777's, and additional MD11's/10's into the fleet. Take those two variables, retirements and growth, and they overshadow replacing a 3 holer (which will be around still at FedEx for a long time) with a 2 holer.
Latest retirement figures that were posted by the company over 3 yrs ago had retirements (age 60 guys only, no early) averaging 150+ per yr till 2021, when I retire. That's about 3-4% of the crew force hanging up their skates each yr. Couple those nums with growth and yeah, like Purple Tail said, hiring 2-300 a yr, easily.
But I just fly jets, I'm not one of the bean counters and we didn't put a new pink body on the property in '03 so ....... go figure. Now we're scrambling.

VP of Flight Ops just sent a message about future fleet growth in the next 1-2 years. Adding 20 widebodies in 2007. Mentioned needing additional bodies on the property, nothing about curtailing hiring due to addition of 757s. Looks like hiring will continue at a nice pace.

I have a 727 question. I quote from this website under Fedex:
"To spend $2.6B to replace 727-200s with up to 90 757-200s between 2008 and 2016"
UPS has 13 727-100's. (They got rid of 727-200's?!) Why isn't 727-100 mentioned in the above quote?
