Fdx Pilots In Almaty Jail
#23
Thought about carrying a "Borat" leisure suit and 'stache for Almaty diverts from UAFM/Manas/Bishkek after the movie came out. Thought better of it in the long run- and sounds like it would definitely get me tossed in the cooler if the guy that monitors ATIS saw it.

The Almaty crew did not go to any jail, they were "safe" in the hotel. The Wx was crap but it was "LIDO" legal when they shot the approach. No discipline, no problem, even got to fly out to France!

Let's see, weather at mins, hmmmm, go around and head for the alternate, Bishkeck, where we have no services, no layover hotel and no way to even get or pay for gas, and sit on the plane for hours under armed guard, then house arrest in a hotel and then wait for another 24 hrs while FDX and the State Dept negotiate your departure, or shoot the approach in Alamaty and spend a night in the Alamaty hooch? Tough decision!

Wonder what the real story was. What were they really after??
I went in there once, landed on runway 5. The police met our aircraft and tried to tell us we taxied over a taxi light and broke it and had to pay for it. The light wasn't anywhere near where we landed or taxied. Took about 20 minutes with the station manager and the mechanic to prove we did not taxi over the broken light. About 30 minutes later, the second Fedex flight came in. The police met them, and tried to tell THEM they broke the taxi light. I wonder how many planes landed before someone was scared into paying for it.
And I DO NOT carry my passport on my in Almaty, per the station manager. His info is on the dispo, he says if you have a problem to call his cell, and do not carry your passport.
